Atari Unveils Its New Home Console
Atari, yes that Atari, has been looking to get into the home console business again for a while now. Today, they’ve shown off what was formerly the “Ataribox.” Welcome the Atari VCS.
Not much hard information was released about the platform other than a lot of discussion about how excited they are for their new product. “Every person at Atari and every partner involved with the new platform is just as fanatical about the brand and its heritage as our biggest fans are,” said Michael Arzt, Atari COO of Connected Devices. We don’t yet know who these partners are.
Atari has been a bit of a weird company as of late. The only real major announcements recently included their logo being used in Blade Runner 2049 and appearing on a hat with built-in speakers. Still, it’s nice to see this console emerge from vaporware status.
It promises to be much more than one of the many retro-box consoles. While designed with retro gaming in mind, it also aims to be an entertainment console for the modern age. Atari even boldly claims that it “…will change the way you interact with your TV, just as the original Atari 2600 did.”
Much more needs to be seen before we can recommend this one, but pre-orders open in April. Hopefully we see some firm specs, a list of partners, and a solid explanation of what this thing does before then. Stay tuned to The Gaming Outsider for more as this story develops.
