E3 2018

Sony’s E3 2018 Press Conference Recap

Tonight was Sony’s 2018 E3 press conference, and while they didn’t show off nearly as many games as the competition, the quality was definitely there. We had very few surprise titles, but the new footage we saw from the games we already knew existed look incredible. Here’s a breakdown of what we saw at the presentation, complete with links to all of the trailers and gameplay footage shown.

The Last of Us Part II

Ellie has grown since we last saw her in the original The Last of Us. What’s great about the latest trailer for The Last of Us Part II is how it shows us equal parts cinematic storytelling as well as gameplay. This game looks stunning. It was a great way to kick off this press conference, for sure.

Ghosts of Tsushima

We saw a teaser for Ghosts of Tsushima at last year’s Paris Games Week, but this time we were treated with a gameplay presentation. We were blown away by what we saw from the vast open-world to the gorgeously artistic set pieces. You won’t want to miss this trailer, as it far surpassed our expectations.

Control

One the bigger surprises from Sony’s press conference was Control from Remedy Games. Although we’re still a bit hazy on what’s going on with the story of this universe, the Remedy brand shines in this trailer. Zack, our Senior Editor, actually has an appointment to get his hands on this game during our time at E3, so stay tuned for more details.

Resident Evil 2 Remake

We knew that Resident Evil 2 was in the process of being remade, but we didn’t realize to what extent. After seeing the latest trailer, it’s obvious that this game is much more than a remake. It’s been rebuilt from the ground up, and the trailer stands as one of the most clever we’ve seen in recent memory.

Trover Saves the Universe

You may notice that we didn’t include a trailer for Trover Saves the Universe. Consider this a favor, because we saved you two precious minutes of your time. We have no idea what this game is, because it was a horrible attempt to sell us a game. The game’s writers apparently also work on Rick & Morty; if that’s the case, I now know that I can never bother with that show. Nothing about this trailer was funny. It was awkward and made me want to do everything but play it. This stuck out like a very sore thumb, especially because of what preceded it and came after.

Kingdom Hearts 3

We’ve seen so much Kingdom Hearts 3 already that we were worried about getting fatigued by yet another trailer. But this time around, Sora, Goofy, and Donald team up with Captain Jack Sparrow and the rest of his friends from the Pirates of the Caribbean universe. Sure, it might seem a bit weird to have realistic human characters standing next to Sora and his giant feet. But this piqued my interest about the game more than anything else I’ve seen thus far. I might actually give Kingdom Hearts a shot now.

Death Stranding

Death Stranding has come a long way since it was first announced. The latest trailer shows off some of the gameplay, in addition to its confusing and quirky sci-fi narrative. The more we see of this game, the more intrigued we are. This one is definitely inching towards the top of our must-play lists.

Nioh 2

Fans of the Bloodborne and Dark Souls series eagerly anticipated Nioh from Ninja Theory last year. In a surprise move, the sequel was unveiled during the show tonight. Although we didn’t see much gameplay, it looks very stylized and gorgeous, and it’s sure to offer even more difficulty than the original game.

Spider-Man

This is how you close a show out. Yes, Sony had more to show after the Spider-Man gameplay trailer, but this was the true end to the presentation. Everything about this new action game clicks and looks almost too good to be true. The fighting feels very reminiscent of the Arkham games, the web-slinging looks fun again, and Spider-Man makes funny quips in a way that fans of the original character will appreciate. What’s most intriguing is the presence of five of the Sinister Six villains in this trailer. It seems pretty obvious to us which one Spidey is referring to when he closes the trailer with, “You?”, but we’ll let you watch for yourself.

And that’s it for Sony. It was quite a showing and gave us a nice list of games that we wish we could play right now. Hopefully we’ll have some hands-on experiences to share with you over the next couple of days. Stay tuned for our reactions of the press conference in audio format, as we’ll be posting our latest podcast episode in the near future.
