PS2 backwards compatibility coming to Playstation 4
It looks like our predictions were wrong! Given how much Sony pushed PS Now, their online game streaming service, we assumed backwards compatibility would never be a thing on current generation Sony hardware. Welp, Sony announced last night that they are indeed working on a backwards compatibility solution via emulation for “current generation” hardware. I’m not sure if that strictly means the Playstation 4 or the Playstation 3 as well (both would be wonderful), or if it’ll support discs or just digital downloads, but at least we know its coming in some capacity! Sony still seems to be fairly tight-lipped about the whole thing so we do not have any more information at the moment — hopefully during their Playstation Experience early next month.
All of this was unearthed after Digital Foundry analyzed the PS4 downloads of PS2 Star Wars games bundled with the Battlefront console bundle. It seems like the titles were running off of some type of emulation with PS2 boot up screens included. Shortly after, Sony spilled the beans. Check out the source (via Eurogamer) below to read more information on their discoveries.
