Life is Strange: Before the Storm – Farewell | PC Review
After experiencing tragedy after tragedy in Life is Strange and Life is Strange: Before the Storm, it’s no surprise that the bonus episode Farewell brings us even more heartbreak. Taking us back to the day when Chloe’s life was turned upside down, we watch as Max battles with making the decision on how to tell Chloe that she’s leaving for Seattle. Does she tell Chloe right away that she’s moving, taking the chance to upset Chloe? Or does she wait until the end of the day?
Although they were best friends, it felt as though when Max found the items in Chloe’s house, there was already a noticeable distance between the two. Max seemed to be genuinely surprised by what was going on in the Price household. Rather than just confirming aloud to the player how life was before Chloe’s father died, the dialogue choices also seem to drive that point home. Chloe’s personality is over the top, grasping at the last days of childhood as though she senses that something is about to happen that would steal away the simplicity of life. Depending on the choices you make you have varying degrees of despair in Max’s thoughts with some of them distant, wispy, and fearful.
A True Tearjerker
The gameplay itself is very short. I finished my first playthrough in less than an hour. Afterwards, you unlock the ability to go back and play in Collector’s Mode, just as you could with the other episodes. The biggest frustration with this episode was the technical difficulties I experienced after installation. After being forced to turn off subtitles and to use windowed mode versus full screen, I was finally able to play the episode. It took longer to resolve the issues than it did to play through the episode multiple times.
Farewell Final Verdict
The Farewell episode is the last piece of Chloe’s tragic puzzle and I was crying by the end of each outcome. Each glimpse of hope that Max uncovered in this episode drives home how sad this story truly ended. Make sure to grab a tissue before playing.
