Super Mutant Alien Assault | Switch Review
Ah, Super Mutant Alien Assault: come for the explosions, stay for the dubstep. This 2D shooter from publisher Fellow Traveler and developer Cybernate isn’t the most engrossing gameplay experience I’ve ever had, but if you want a modest challenge and one to two hours of alien splatting mayhem, this one is right up your alley.
These Aren’t the Droids You’re Looking for
You play as a security droid that is protecting the sleepy human cargo on your transport ship from a phalanx of attacking other-worldly monstrosities. There are only 12 levels, you don’t hit a boss until the very end, and most of the challenge comes from co-op play. But this is nonetheless some of the best fun you can have for small increments of time as your significant other scrolls through Netflix finding your next binge-worthy show.
All of the stages are static (no scrolling involved), and the objectives are random, such as getting enough batteries to a generator. Returning to the weapon vending machine is a must, because when you’re out of ammo, you’re out of ammo. But things can get interesting with semiautomatic weapons, rocket launchers, and pulse weapons to boot. Special abilities also become available as play continues.
Two is Twice as Much Fun
Co-op can be more difficult, as you must share the one vending machine that has a recharge time before it’s next use. Also, if one bot goes down, the game is over. On top of that fact, you’re constantly running into each other and getting in each others’ way. But if you want more challenge, this is the way to go. There are higher difficulties for solo runs, but these need to be unlocked through considerably more gameplay than one may want to endure for a few quick runs ofLevel shoot’em up excitement.
Super Mutant Alien Assault Final Verdict
All in all, a $9-$15 price tag is worth opening your wallet for if you need a nice little shooter. This price tag is very much complimented by the fact that this would be a great game for travel if you decide to take your Nintendo Switch on the next family trip.
