Bad North | PC Review
Since the very first time I played real time strategy games, I have loved them. Been horrible at them, but still an amazing genre. Bad North falls into that category, with a dash of roguelite. You get to play as a small group of island commoners that are fleeing from the Viking horde. Bad North is from developer Plausible Concept a small independent game studio in Malmo, Sweden. The publisher is Raw Fury. Is it an amazing little game with lots of fun or a major letdown?
For Valhalla
Bad North is a roguelite real time tactics game where you play as island folk, who are defending their homes from the Viking horde. Starting out with two factions that both start as basic units. These can be upgraded into several classes, such as: commander, militia, infantry, pikes, and archers. From there they have items that can give the units a specialization either as an attachment, like the Warhammer or more of a defense like the bomb.
An additional item are skills, of which there are three. Each are specific to the classes, they are: plunge, pike charge, and volley. Bad North is very rewarding when selecting the right unit to fight the enemy Viking type, but on the other hand can be frustrating constantly having to restart a level when all your units are dying. Controls are very basic, which makes this a nice game to play anywhere. The game runs buttery smooth on my PC and with a small file size would work great on Xbox, PS4, and Switch. It’s easy to pick up; difficult to master.
Bad North is a decently long game at 7 to 9 hours, and since it’s a roguelite, you can expect a lot of different playthroughs since if you’re like me you will be dying a lot. If a gamer enjoys classic RTS games like Age of Empires or tower defense games like Anomaly, they will enjoy this game. For the price, Bad North is an excellent game that will please both the hardcore, as well as a casual user. There is a ton of replay value in the game since islands are all unique based on their size, and will keep players on their toes at all times.
