Sniper Elite 3: Ultimate Edition | Switch Review
Sniper Elite 3: Ultimate Edition is a port of the 2014 game to the Switch. It features a campaign set in WWII where you assume the role of a lone soldier trying to turn the tide of the war. It includes all the DLC, as well as the multiplayer modes of the original. Rather than review the story/campaign elements of this game lets talk about why you are probably reading this…how does this game run on the Switch?
Fire From Afar
The biggest issue I’ve run into when playing ports of games on the Switch is slowdown. The Switch generally doesn’t have the highest processing power of today’s consoles. I was absolutely shocked with how the game ran. It was a smooth and consistent 30 frames-per-second, regardless of what was happening on the screen. Draw distance is incredibly far Sniping an enemy from all the way across the map is absolutely possible, as long as you do your part with the bullet drop. The texture quality was excellent and the game looks very good on the Switch.
I spent time playing Sniper Elite 3: Ultimate Edition docked and handheld with no difference. This is how a Switch port should be done. They were even able to include the slow motion bullet hits on the enemy when you snipe them, which is something that the series is known for. They are completely intact in all their gruesomeness.
Fine Tuning
Controls are very interesting for this game. Besides the standard FPS controller layout you can also use motion controls. You can use the stick to make your main movements and then use the motion controls to make really fine movements to your aim. It’s quite different and feels very intuitive in practice.
Sniper Elite 3: Ultimate Edition is definitely a game worth buying if you are looking for a 3rd person shooter on the Switch. The fantastic performance, combined with being able to play anywhere, makes this an easy game to recommend. Worth it for shooter fans.
