The Disguiser of Fate | PC Review
Landing on a volcanic island, our main character finds that the only way is through this dark cave, possibly filled with monsters. Courageous as our hero is, he walks in. Confronted with only a small walking path, it leads him to a coffin. A coffin that doesn’t house anyone, yet contains a mysterious mask that seems to draw him into putting it on. After doing so, he is instantly transported to a lush, green, yet unknown region. He forgets who he is and what for what reason he is there.
Seeing as I have only dabbled with a select few indie games, I decided I would try out The Disguiser of Fate. This is a very short, old-school RPG. It should take experienced RPG fans only five hours to complete it. Which is good, because the story is a tad mediocre, and the combat way too easy. This makes for a bitter play-through for those not familiar with the genre, but there’s a lot to love for RPG fans.
Visuals
The developers over at Windward_Birds and XNZONE definitely put some time into the look of Disguiser of Fate. You can tell by each character that you encounter or talk to. The each have their own unique look and personality. The colors are crisp, and the game has an amazing visual art style. I have to say, this saved the game for me.
The combat, however, lacked what the rest of the game had: finesse. It reminded me of the old school Pokémon games before there battles were animated. This is one of the biggest drawbacks to The Disguiser of Fate.
My Conclusion
Overall, I don’t think The Disguiser of Fate received all the love and care it should have gotten. If the combat aspect were polished, we would be back in business. One other small feature disappointed me. When you die in combat, you are taken back to the main menu. After reloading the game save, everything you did before saving isn’t there. Ouch!
Even though I sound overly critical, I still say check it out. Keep in mind that I don’t play a ton of JRPGs; those with more experience in the genre should enjoy this more than I did. It’s also quite affordably priced. This game has so much potential, and I would love to see it reach that potential.
