Leisure Suit Larry – Wet Dreams Dry Twice | PC Review
Larry Laffer is back! Again! You can’t keep this lovable loser down, as we return for the second new sequel to the classic Leisure Suit Larry series. In 2018, Larry got resurrected by Crazy Bunch and Assemble Entertainment, and they literally transported from the roaring 80’s to “Me Too”-era 20’s. Needless to say, this transition was quite a big thing for our white suit-wearing Casanova, and much of the humor comes from Larry trying to deal with how different the modern era is compared to the 1980’s. Wet Dreams Dry Twice still has some of that, but gives us a completely new adventure that starts right after the first wet dream ended.
The Spy Who Loved Me
I want to start off here by briefly addressing the first new Larry game that I got to review for the Gaming Outsider in 2018. It was one of the first games I reviewed and looking back, I think I should’ve scored it a bit higher, as it was a highly enjoyable game. I clearly remember hoping that they would make a sequel, and two years later, I got my wish.
The aptly named Wet Dreams Dry Twice continues the story of Larry who is looking for love in all the wrong places, as usual. But the difference with the first game is that instead of making fun of hipsters and social media, Larry now finds himself in a James Bond spoof. And it works.
From Korea with Love
Larry heads out to the Kalau’a Archipelago to find Faith, the woman he loves and lost at the end of the first game and whose full name is Faith Less. He also uses this as an excuse to get out of an arranged marriage with the daughter of the island’s elder. He’s never even seen this girl!
Anyway, Faith is the one for him, and Larry Laffer wouldn’t be Larry Laffer if he let an ocean and the absence of a water vehicle deter him from his quest. Larry meets a lot of new faces during his adventures, and some old ones as well. And there are Korean spies, assassins, lesbian cannibals, triplets, gimps, nerds, ghosts, Bitcoin miners, and so much more.
License To Thrill
The graphics are fantastic. Larry plays like an interactive XXX animated show. The animations are very smooth and the hand painted locales are gorgeous. It’s almost all in that style and it really does Larry justice. Almost all? Yes, there is a segment that is significantly different, but telling more would be spoilers!
The sound is also great. From the moment the game starts we get lounge music and other appropriate scores like tropical music. A lot of tropical music. The voice acting is ace; they really embody their characters and have a nice chemistry. Larry himself got an especially good voice for the character.
The World Is Not Enough
Gameplay is pretty straightforward. If you’ve ever played a point and click adventure game, then this has no surprises for you. You walk around and stick everything that isn’t bolted down into your pockets, because you might have to use it later. The game has a hot spot detector, so there’s no pixel hunting. You can combine inventory items or use them in the environment, you can talk to people, and walk anywhere. Another great shortcut: double clicking on an exit will immediately take you there. I love it when games implement these kinds of quality of life features, it makes playing so much more enjoyable.
For Your Eyes Only
This game is definitely not safe for work. There are a lot of raunchy jokes and scenes of a sexual nature. There’s no real nudity, but a lot is implied. There’s one puzzle that involves sex toys, a gimp tied to a cross, and a strap-on. I’ll leave the rest to your imagination, but needless to say it was a moment where I feared Twitch would kick me off the platform! The game does manage to stay on the right side, and the Leisure Suit Larry games have always been a bit raunchy, so this is actually completely in the spirit of the originals.
Casino Royale
The puzzles are generally challenging, but not too challenging if you pay attention. Often, when I was stuck, I just needed to do something else first, or I missed a clue. There were two puzzles however, that I thought went on for too long and where a mistake made you start over again. They are both near the end of the game, and were the only moments where I got frustrated in a bad way. But with help from some folks in my Twitch chat, I managed to get through it and finish the game. And when I finished it, I had the same feeling as when I finished the first one: I hope they get to make another sequel.
Conclusion
Apart from the two slightly frustrating puzzles, Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Dry Twice is great to play. There were a few typos in the texts and there was one character whose dialogue didn’t completely match the on-screen text, but it was nothing to put me off the game. I highly enjoyed being back with my man Larry Laffer and I spent a very fun 16 hours in his presence. The jokes might not always land for everyone, but I feel that Crazy Bunch managed to capture the spirit of the original Larry games again in this sequel, and I hope they get to keep going further into the land of the lounge lizards while looking for love in all the wrong places.
