Cyanide & Happiness – Freakpocalypse Part 1: Hall Pass To Hell | PC Review
Cyanide & Happiness: Freakpocalyse is the first episode of three games in the series. It’s a point and click adventure developed by Explosm and Skeleton Crew Studios and published by Serenity Forge. The game was also backed by a large number of people on Kickstarter. Is this game a snore or a laugh out loud good time?
The Joys of Quality Poison
Cyanide & Happiness: Freakpocalyse follow the protagonist Coop McCarthy, who just wants to make the world a better place, but everyone seems to hate him and he is continually bullied by both students and teachers. Coop is on the hunt to look for a date for prom, and also to not have his butt beat by the bullies. The basis of the game is set in small areas for Coop to explore, and everything and everyone he interacts with all have dialogue. Even when he makes a decision that doesn’t work, the game will let you know that was a dumb idea.
The game is very easy to play with side to side scrolling and selecting items that Coop can pickup for quests or in-game known as chores. These can be as basic as getting a hall pass or as complicated as bringing explicit photos to the senior center from your grandma for her man. The dialogue has branching lines and the content is great to hear, and each conversation can bring up different storylines from a guy looking for industrial markers to sniff, to your principal wanting to make the cheer squad. The in-game dialogue is great and I really like that every NPC in-game and each item has unique voice lines, which really makes the game feel alive. The varied changes from level to level are easy to follow and give the player some freedom in doing chores.
Cyanide & Happiness: Freakpocalypse Final Verdict
Cyanide & Happiness: Freakpocalyse clocked in around two to three hours depending on who Coop talks to in the world. The humor in the game is great, definitely not family friendly by any means, and lots of dark humor you would expect from the series. For it being part of a trilogy of games, I think it does a very good job with humor and pacing. There is a ton to unlock, such as costumes and achievements. I would recommend this game to anyone who likes the comics from Cyanide and Happiness and likes their style of humor.
