Developer Offworld Industries has just released Patch 1.3 for Starship Troopers: Extermination, and it’s available to play right now. Based on the classic 90s action film, the game first launched in Steam Early Access in May 2023. It then reached its full 1.0 release in October 2024, alongside its console debut. With Patch 1.3 now live and Patch 1.4 coming later, Offworld Industries remains committed to enhancing the gameplay experience with everything from new content to quality-of-life improvements.

Would You Like to Know More?

Starship Troopers: Extermination is a co-op multiplayer first-person shooter that drops players into the boots of the Deep Space Vanguard, an elite branch of the Federation’s Mobile Infantry. Team up with friends to take on hordes of Arachnid bugs across diverse environments. The developers at Offworld Industries have committed to ongoing support with more updates and content on the horizon, including a roadmap to keep players engaged with exciting new features in the near future.

PATCH 1.3 – Evolving the Battlefield

  • Dynamic Sky & Weather System – Valaka, Boreas, and Agni Prime now feature Day & Night cycles and Dynamic Weather, creating an ever-changing battlefield for troopers. Each planet has unique weather systems, adding new challenges. The Sandstorm Mutator has been revamped with varying intensities, from mild to blinding. New Extreme Weather Mutators include thunderstorms, blizzards and ashstorms, making survival even tougher.
  • Staged Weapon Reloads – No more frustrating interruptions. All weapons (except the Sp.L.I.T Shotgun Slug) now feature progressive reload stages. If you’re forced to stop reloading mid-combat you’ll resume from the last checkpoint rather than starting over.
  • Various Quality-of-Life Enhancements
    • XP for Disconnections: Players will now earn XP if they disconnect due to crashes or server issues. Deserters, however, won’t be so lucky.
    • Improved Company System: Invite friends to your company directly from their profile or request to join a company even without an invitation.
    • Optimization and Bug Fixes: Smoother combat, better performance and a more polished experience.

PATCH 1.4 – What’s Coming Next?

Patch 1.4 is set to arrive later this year and will introduce even more game-changing additions:

  • Underbarrel Attachment for Morita MK1: A highly requested feature is finally making it’s way to the arsenal, opening the door for future Morita MK2 and MK3 upgrades. (Editor’s Note: The Morita MK1 is the in-universe name given to the standard issue Federation assault rifles seen in the films)
  • Broadcast Heroism System: Become a Federation war reporter! Recover FedNet Broadcast Cameras on the battlefield and capture the chaos to boost your squad’s morale XP. Side objectives in ARC and Horde modes will now feature these thrilling recording opportunities.
  • Many More Quality-of-Life Enhancements: Offworld will continue to enhance, expand, and improve the Starship Troopers gameplay experience.

MY THOUGHTS

The whole debate between releasing a game piecemeal versus a full release really comes down to balancing keeping players engaged against making sure the game is ready. The gradual roll-out approach that Off-World Industries is taking with Starship Troopers: Extermination, gives room for improvements and player feedback, but it can also feel like the game is incomplete at first – especially with it’s single-player campaign still a work in progress. Despite the “incomplete” vibe, I still enjoyed the game immensely and gave it a glowing review, but there’s definitely room for improvements and new content down the line.

A full-fledged release gives you everything upfront, but it can sometimes come with serious technical hiccups, leading to patches and studio resources focused on damage control rather than adding new content or DLC expansions. In the case of Starship Troopers: Extermination, the key will be how quickly and effectively it transitions from a promising but limited release to a fully realized experience. Either way, I’ll still be doing my part, because after all…service guarantees citizenship!
