New 16-Bit Style Farming Simulator Coming to Sega Genesis
Strictly Limited Games has announced the upcoming launch of Farming Simulator: 16-Bit Edition, a unique retro style spinoff of the long-running and wildly celebrated simulation series, designed for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive compatible consoles. Known for its realistic environments, serene gameplay, and extensive use of real-world farming brands, the Farming Simulator series has become a staple of the genre since it’s debut.
Cultivating Nostalgia Like It’s 1989!
The idea for Farming Simulator: 16-Bit Edition was born from the collector’s edition of Farming Simulator 25, which came as digital download packaged in a retro-style case. While it didn’t include a physical game, the overwhelmingly positive response to the throwback packaging inspired GIANTS Software and Strictly Limited to go one step further…with an ACTUAL, playable Sega Genesis cartridge, for use with original Genesis hardware.
The game will be launching on May 14th, 2025 (you can pre-order them at this link) and is set to release in two collectible formats:
- LIMITED EDITION: Priced at €49.99 ($56.79 US)
- DELUXE EDITION: Priced at €69.99 ($79.99 US) – Includes additional collectible content.
Both releases will come in an exclusive green colored cartridge, limited to just 1,000 units worldwide, and will only be available to purchase through the Strictly Limited Store. In addition to the Strictly Limited Store’s exclusive versions, a separate standard edition featuring a typical black Genesis cartridge will be available at select retailers like Amazon for global markets, or through VideoGamesPlus for North America. The content will remain the same across all versions and releases, but the color of the cartridge will distinguish the limited versus the standard editions.
With Farming Simulator: 16-Bit Edition, fans of the long running franchise and retro gamers alike have a rare opportunity to enjoy farming gameplay reimagined for a bygone era of pixels and chiptunes from 16-Bit systems. Having a physical release reinforces Strictly Limited’s continued dedication to preserving gaming history and delivering premium physical media that celebrate iconic genres and franchises.
MY THOUGHTS
I love when new games get released onto classic hardware. It’s sure to fan the nostalgic flames, but it’s also a win for physical media and game collectors everywhere! (See my article on Terminator 2D for more thoughts on that.) Even though I’ve never played a Farming Simulator game myself, I’d love to get a physical copy of this just to try it and have in my collection. I’m also willing to bet that our own Kevin Honigford would most likely appreciate this too. Not sure if he really goes for games of this type, but I do know that as the world’s biggest fan of the Blue Blur, surely he’s got a few Genesises (Genesus?…Genesy?…err…screw it…Mega Drive!). Surely he’s got a few MEGA DRIVES lying around at home!
