SPINE – cyberpunk Gun Fu is coming to Switch 2

SPINE is a cinematic, single-player action game developed and published by Nekki, set in a cyberpunk world dominated by AI. Announced during the Twitch Galaxies showcase, SPINE received a new gameplay trailer highlighting its signature Freeflow Gun Fu combat system. The game is set to release on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and now officially Nintendo Switch 2. While no exact release date was given, the game has already built anticipation with over 400,000 wishlists across platforms.

In SPINE , players step into the role of Redline, a rebellious street artist accompanied by her sentient combat implant, SPINE, as they take on the oppressive Tensor Corporation. The gameplay emphasizes fluid, cinematic combat where Redline seamlessly moves from enemy to enemy, parrying, disarming, and improvising with environmental interactions and melee weapons. The combat system, choreographed with input from action movie stunt experts and powered by Unreal Engine 5 and Nekki’s Cascadeur animation engine, lets players feel like both the star and director of an intense action film.

A new trailer also teased the game’s Hardcore Mode, where Redline dons sunglasses that stay intact only if the player avoids all enemy damage, adding a stylish twist to no-hit gameplay. Game Director Dmitry Pimenov emphasized the importance of tactical awareness and cinematic flair, stating that SPINE‘s design rewards creativity and mastery with dynamic, immersive combat sequences.

What We Can Expect

  • Movie-Like Experience – SPINE puts players inside the action with a dynamic combat camera that makes every fight feel like a movie, without ever stealing control from players.
  • Innovative Combat – A thrilling fusion of cinematic gunplay and Freeflow Gun Fu beat ’em up. Dive into the chaos of SPINE‘s combat, where every move is a dance between gunfire and raw, close-quarter bullet mayhem. It’s not just a game; it’s an artistic canvas for your own style of destruction.
  • Unrivaled Atmosphere – Dive into an action-packed narrative set against the backdrop of a captivating cyberpunk world. Explore the contrast between the gleaming, utopian facades and the gritty, decaying alleyways, as each location becomes a stage for adrenaline-fueled gunfights.
  • Gripping Narrative – Embark on a gritty journey into the near-future with Redline, a rebellious street artist, and her AI companion, Spine — a combat implant with a mind of its own. Together, they stand against an oppressive AI regime, and every fight they have sends ripples through the streets they navigate, changing the lives of the people they meet.

My Thoughts

SPINE, to me, looks like the most successful attempt yet at capturing the essence of a John Wick video game. The term “Freeflow Gun Fu” hits perfectly, promising players the thrill of stylish, cinematic combat while rebelling against today’s buzzword-laden fear factory: AI. SPINE looks like an absolute blast to play and has easily earned a spot on my must-play list. Check out the trailer. Are you as excited as I am?
