Once Upon a Puppet is out now!

Once Upon a Puppet, developed by Flatter Than Earth and published by Daedalic Entertainment, officially launched yesterday, April 23, 2025, on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam Deck. A Nintendo Switch release is scheduled for early June 2025, with the exact date to be announced soon.

Set in a magical, hand-crafted puppet kingdom, Once Upon a Puppet is a visually rich, puzzle-platformer that combines thread-based mechanics and dual-character gameplay. Players control Nieve, an exiled stagehand, and Drev, a fate-bound puppet, as they explore a mysterious world of forgotten stories and shifting theatrical stages. Together, they confront eerie puppet foes, navigate dramatic puzzles, and strive to return to the grand theater above.

The game’s enchanting launch trailer highlights the emotionally driven journey and the evolving bond between its two protagonists, all wrapped in a beautifully hand-animated presentation.

What We Can Expect

  • Dual Character Gameplay: Simultaneously control Drev and Nieve, combining their unique skills to navigate a dynamic world.
  • Thread-Based Mechanics: Manipulate environments, interact with props, and uncover secrets using their magical thread.
  • Hand-Crafted Theatrical World: Explore stunning set pieces, move backdrops, and collectible costumes inspired by classic stage performances.
  • Narrative-Driven Adventure: Rebuild lost theatrical sets and uncover the dark mysteries haunting the Understage.

My Thoughts

While watching the trailer for Once Upon a Puppet, my first thought was, This feels reminiscent of Little Nightmares.” But then I kept watching. The platforming style is familiar, sure. But the art direction and storytelling approach are uniquely their own. I was instantly intrigued.

Take a look at the description above. If that sounds as exciting and imaginative to you as it does to me, I think we’re in for something special. Check out the trailer below!
