State Of Play Unveils Debut Trailer For 007: First Light

IO Interactive just unveiled the debut trailer for 007: First Light, their long-awaited James Bond game. Formerly known as Project 007, this marks the franchise’s return after a 12-year hiatus and introduces a brand-new origin story for the world’s most famous spy. The title was unveiled during today’s Sony State of Play and is slated for release in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

Grow Up, 007!

Taking place years before earning his license to kill, First Light puts players in the role of 26-year-old Royal Navy air crewman James Bond, newly recruited into MI6. As Bond rises through the ranks of the resurrected 00 Section, players will choose how to approach missions across the world—either with stealth, charm, or brute force.

The game blends IO’s signature stealth-action gameplay with a cinematic espionage narrative. Players will encounter classic and familiar characters such as M, Q, and Moneypenny, alongside new characters like Bond’s mentor, John Greenway, along with the mysterious villain known as Isola.

Earn the Number

The trailer opens with a conversation between M and Greenway debating the young recruit’s reckless, insubordinate behavior—Greenway sees red flags, but M sees potential. From there, we get a glimpse of a fresh-faced 26-year-old Bond in action: sneaking through stealth sections, using Q’s latest gadgets, engaging in slick third-person combat, and tearing through high-speed vehicular chases in a 1969 Aston Martin—a clear nod to On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. All of it is set to a pulse-pounding rendition of the OHMSS theme. A more in-depth look at 007: First Light is expected during IO Interactive’s dedicated presentation on June 6th, as part of the event-packed Summer Game Fest weekend.

My Thoughts

As a lifelong Bond fan, this is exactly the kind of reveal I was hoping for. We haven’t had a proper 007 game in over a decade, and First Light feels like it’s aiming to bring the franchise back in a big way. IO Interactive’s expertise with stealth, choice-driven gameplay, and stylish presentation already makes this a perfect match. But layering that on top of a full-blown Bond origin story? I’m all in.

One thing I’m really hoping for is the chance to interact with other 00 agents. It’s something that’s been hinted at in the films for years but never truly explored. A young Bond training and operating alongside other elite spies could add a whole new layer to the story — and I’d love to see how IO handles those dynamics.
