Fallen Tear: The Ascension, a JRPG-inspired Metroidvania, Unleashes Prologue Demo and New Trailer Today

Fallen Tear: The Ascension is a JRPG-inspired, hand-animated sidescrolling Metroidvania from developer Winter Crew and publisher CMD Studios. It launches in Q1 2026 for PC via Steam and consoles. To build anticipation, the team released a brand-new prologue demo along with the dramatic “Fated Bonds” trailer, giving players an early look at the mystical world of Raoah.

In the demo, players meet Hira, a young boy with a mysterious past and strange powers tied to Raoah’s fate. As you guide him through lush forests, quiet towns, and towering castles, Hira begins to uncover lost memories and form key relationships.

The game’s signature system, Fated Bonds, allows Hira to recruit allies who become active abilities. These bonds fuel both combat and exploration, helping players defeat tough bosses and unlock new areas. CMD Studios founder Stephen Manalastas calls this system “a keystone” of the game’s design and story.

Ascension Abilities add another strategic layer. These powers, tied to Hira’s origins, unlock new biomes and reshape the world map in real time. The result is a living, interconnected world—described by the developers as “the Elden Ring of Metroidvanias.”

The June 2025 demo offers 1–2 hours of gameplay and a glimpse into the larger story. It raises early questions about Hira’s identity and his connection to a powerful Overgrowth form linked to Raoah’s wild gods. With full voice acting, cinematic scenes, and additional polish coming in the full release, Fallen Tear: The Ascension is shaping up to be one of 2026’s most anticipated indie titles.

What We Can Expect

  • A deep and emotional narrative centered on Hira, a young boy with mysterious origins, in a hand-drawn world full of lore and secrets.

  • Strategic exploration powered by the Fated Bonds system, where recruited allies become active abilities used in both combat and traversal.

  • A massive, interconnected map that evolves based on player actions—billed as “the Elden Ring of Metroidvania” in scale and freedom.

  • A robust prologue demo offering 1–2 hours of gameplay, setting the stage with early access to boss fights, relationship-building, and Ascension Abilities.

My Thoughts

My excitement for Fallen Tear: The Ascension has only grown. The new trailer highlights even more character depth, suggesting a story that’s every bit as expansive as the game’s massive world. The hand-drawn visuals remain absolutely stunning, and the musical score already feels like something I could get lost in for hours. It’s the kind of experience that begs to be explored slowly and completely. I just wish we didn’t have to wait until 2026 to play the full version!
