Announcing Letters of War: a spiritual successor to Valiant Hearts ready to win your heart!

Letters of War, a 2D narrative adventure from indie studio Wood Cabin Games, is coming to PC via Steam in Summer 2025. Inspired by Valiant Hearts: The Great War and based on a true family story, the game explores the emotional toll of World War II.

Players control Liam, a British carpenter who enlists to protect his loved ones. The story also follows Rosie, his daughter, who stays home in wartime Britain. Her father’s letters offer comfort as she waits for his return. Liam’s journey takes players through major battles like Normandy and Monte Cassino.

The team behind the game formed in 2022, with members based in Kazakhstan and the UK. The project began as a tribute to the lead developer’s grandmother and her father. The Steam page and teaser trailer are now live. English and Russian will be available at launch, with more languages planned.

What We Can Expect

  • A deeply emotional, family-driven narrative that switches perspectives between a soldier at war and his daughter waiting at home.

  • Historical authenticity, with key moments set during iconic WWII battles such as Normandy and Monte Cassino.

  • Hand-crafted 2D artwork and storytelling, inspired by Valiant Hearts, with an emphasis on heart over spectacle.

  • A meaningful debut from a Kazakhstan–UK indie team, turning one family’s legacy into an experience for players of all ages.

My Thoughts

I love championing indie studios, and this one feels especially personal. Not just personal for the developers, but for the player as well. Letters of War looks to offer something quiet and moving, where the impact comes from heartfelt moments rather than explosive set pieces. The fact that it’s inspired by a real family story just makes it all the more special. I’m already emotionally invested, and I haven’t even opened the first letter yet.
