BetaDwarf Receives Significant Investment From Square Enix
Danish indie studio BetaDwarf has secured a major investment from Final Fantasy publisher Square Enix to accelerate development on its upcoming title, Vaultbreakers. Known for games like Forced and Minion Masters, BetaDwarf revealed Vaultbreakers earlier this year; a top-down, high-stakes co-op RPG that blends intense brawler-style combat with dynamic world exploration. Designed for both solo and multiplayer play, the game features PvE and PvPvE modes where players battle bosses, recover lost relics, and execute daring escapes. The announcement coincides with the debut of the game’s first full gameplay trailer and a public playtest running through July 9th.
An Indie Success Story
This investment marks a major milestone for BetaDwarf and highlights the industry’s growing interest in multiplayer experiences that emphasize collaboration, strategy, and dynamic gameplay.
“Square Enix is always looking for high-quality games and talented development studios,” said Hideaki Uehara, General Manager of Business Development at Square Enix Holdings. “When I played Vaultbreakers, I was genuinely excited by the experience of connecting with other players and exploring its rich game world.”
Steffan Kabbelgaard, CEO and Game Director of BetaDwarf also expressed enthusiasm about the partnership:
“Being accompanied by Square Enix on our journey is an amazing access to a combination of knowledge, talent and resources. We’re already far along in developing our dream game, and support like this is a huge boost. I can really see how this enables a home run.”
About Vaultbreakers
Alongside the announcement, BetaDwarf launched a public playtest from July 3rd to July 9th, featuring newly implemented features based on player feedback from a January 2025 alpha. Players can join the playtest by registering at vaultbreakers.com or by participating in the game’s ongoing Twitch Drops campaign.
BetaDwarf has promised even more updates in the coming months, including the aforementioned PvE mode, the development of which has become top priority at the studio due to community demand.

My Thoughts
In a time when the news is usually full of layoffs, studio shutdowns, and companies getting swallowed up, it’s really nice to see a story like this pop up. It’s great news for the devs (who doesn’t love a surprise cash boost, amiright?) and even better news for gamers. When talented studios that are used to working with tight budgets get a solid investment, it usually means they’re going to make something awesome.
A game like Vaultbreakers, a top-down fantasy RPG, definitely feels right up Square Enix’s alley. I don’t usually follow what Square Enix puts out since I’m not into Final Fantasy, and they’ve mostly stepped away from publishing Western games like the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy and some Hitman titles. So most of their stuff just doesn’t click with me. But whether I end up playing Vaultbreakers or not, it’s cool to see a big company stepping up to help indie games get some well-deserved attention.
