New Game From Endling: Extinction Is Forever Developers – Rewilders: The Lost Spring
Herobeat, the studio behind the BAFTA-winning and Game Award-nominated Endling: Extinction is Forever, has revealed its next project: Rewilders: The Lost Spring. This open-world action roguelite blends creature collection with metroidvania-style progression. It will release in the future for PC and consoles, with launch details still to come. Unlike its first title, Herobeat will self-publish Rewilders: The Lost Spring. That makes it both the studio’s second game and its debut as a publisher. The game will make its first public showing at gamescom in Cologne, Germany, from August 20–22, 2025.
In Rewilders: The Lost Spring, players take on the role of Abi, a survivor returning to a poisoned Earth. Her mission is to rescue her missing family and help restore the wild. Gameplay focuses on healing corrupted biomes, battling hostile creatures, and reactivating mystical Springs that bring life back to the land. The Hântu also make their debut here. These reawakened creatures, once thought extinct, can be recruited, leveled up, and evolved to create unique combat strategies.
Each run offers something new. Players gain traversal tools like a glider, grappling hook, and wall-running to reach fresh areas and reclaim ecosystems. Between expeditions, they return to a skyship base to plant seeds, harvest resources, and unlock permanent upgrades. Every victory ends with a choice. Will you restore the memory of the world that once was? Or will you let anger reshape it into something entirely new?
Although not a direct sequel to Endling: Extinction is Forever, Rewilders: The Lost Spring carries forward Herobeat’s philosophy of emotional, ecologically charged storytelling. The team draws inspiration from Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli to emphasize themes of family, responsibility, and restoration. The game aims to leave players with a message that lingers well after the credits roll.
What We Can Expect
- Creature collecting — collect Hântu, native creatures with active abilities, status effects, and passive bonuses.
- Fast-paced third-person combat combining melee, ranged, and Hântu skills.
- Roguelite elements with randomized rewards, enemies, and starting points plus a forgiving death and respawn systems.
- Interconnected world with metroidvania-style progression using gliders, wall runs, grapples and more.
- Base-building system: grow plants and fruits to level up your Hântu and unlock permanent buffs.
- Narrative progression: choose between Memory or Hatred to shape your build and gameplay path.
My Thoughts
Rewilders: The Lost Spring is a beautiful-looking game with an environmental heart of gold. It speaks through two of my favorite genres: Roguelite (or, in GO Cast terms, a run-based randomizer) and Metroidvania (or, in GO Cast terms, a gear-gated game). Collecting creatures and plants to grow stronger, battling enemies of the Earth’s environment, and restoring biomes to their rightful glory sounds like a wonderful way to spend a few hours gaming. I hope the team at Herobeat can pull it off and create an experience that entertains while also inspiring players around the world.
