Sony’s State of Play Reveals Detailed Gameplay for 007: First Light

Earlier today, Sony dedicated its latest State of Play livestream to one thing only: Bond, James Bond. The showcase focused on IO Interactive‘s upcoming title, 007: First Light, which is set to launch on March 27th, 2026. The stream gave fans their first extended look at the game’s style, tone, and mechanics. IO Interactive, best known for the Hitman trilogy, is leaning hard into its reputation for slick stealth, flexible mission design, and cinematic flair. This game depicts an entirely original Bond, not modeled after any actor from the films, with a story crafted exclusively for the game.

Bond, James Bond

License To Kill

The livestream, clocking just over a half hour, begins by walking viewers through the opening mission of the game, starting in typical Bond fashion: infiltrating a black-tie gala. Bond’s cover role, however, is that of a simple chauffeur, much to his annoyance. The quiet setup doesn’t last long. After spotting a suspicious figure, Bond disobeys orders, abandons his post, and slips inside the party to investigate. This portion of the showcase was presented without any developer commentary, letting the game speak entirely for itself. From there, the showcase offered the first in-depth look at the stealth mechanics. Bond uses gadgets, improvisation, and distraction to outmaneuver security, a design philosophy that echoes the Hitman series.

The demo quickly escalates, leading to a high-speed car chase after a compromised 00 agent makes a desperate escape. The sequence gives the first glimpse of the game’s driving mechanics, emphasizing tight action and Bond’s signature cinematic flair. The mission then shifts gears again, moving to an airport where Bond attempts to stop a C-130 cargo plane from taking off. Here, the showcase highlights the game’s gunplay and cover-based third-person combat, layering action set pieces alongside stealth.

Key Features

After the extended gameplay demo, the stream shifts to actor Patrick Gibson, who provides James Bond’s voice and performance capture. He introduces the rest of the cast before the developers narrate, explaining the game’s mechanics and Bond’s abilities in greater detail.

My Thoughts

Well, I’m sold! But the title? Ehh… it’s still not quite growing on me. As one of the world’s biggest Bond fans, I think I’ve come up with a better one: On His Majesty’s Secret Service.

It works on two levels. First, it’s a nod to franchise history, particularly the novel and film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, which marked George Lazenby’s only outing as 007—often forgotten in discussions about Bond movies. Second, the simple pronoun swap (from Her to His) reflects a huge real-world change in the British Royal crown. It’s hard to believe that every single piece of James Bond media, from Fleming’s first novel Casino Royale all the way to Daniel Craig’s last film No Time to Die, existed under Queen Elizabeth II. 007: First Light will be the first new Bond story under King Charles III. I’m still holding out hope that Amazon MGM Studios will use this title for the next Bond film.

I’ve given this a lot of thought, and honestly, it’s a hill I’ll happily die on! Beyond the title, the game itself looks incredible. IO Interactive has clearly infused it with the DNA of the Hitman trilogy, such as flexible stealth, clever gadgets, and player-driven approaches to missions, all while capturing what’s kept James Bond such an enduring franchise throughout the decades. 007: First Light promises a fresh Bond era that’s smart, stylish, and unapologetically action-packed.
