Magical roguelike arrives 19th September – Folly of the Wizards

Numskull Games has announced that Folly of the Wizards, a 2D action roguelike from UpFox Labs, will launch on September 19, 2025. The game will be available digitally on Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. Physical editions will also be released through European retailers. Players take on the role of a bumbling wizard’s apprentice who finds themselves tangled in the chaos of a shadowy cult.

Each run takes place in procedurally generated dungeons filled with unpredictable spells, dangerous traps, and slapstick magical mishaps. The adventure spans ten whimsical regions, each packed with eccentric enemies and hidden secrets. Fast-paced platforming challenges keep the action lively, while more than 100 unique items give every attempt a different twist. Players can befriend fellow wizards, betray them, or accidentally blow themselves up in the process.

Folly of the Wizards is a playful tribute to roguelikes and to clumsy spellcasters who are simply trying their best.

What We Can Expect

  • Chaotic Spellcasting – Sling spells with wild effects. Magic is powerful—but often hilariously unstable
  • 2D Platforming Roguelike Action – Jump, dodge, and cast through ever-changing dungeons.
  • Vibrant Hand-Drawn World – Explore a whimsically illustrated universe of fantasy roguelike oddities
  • Dynamic Decisions – Forge alliances (or rivalries) with eccentric cult members. Choices shape the story in mysterious ways
  • Endless Replayability – With procedural generation, randomized loot, and ever-shifting encounters, no two runs are the same

My Thoughts

Back in mid-2023, I played a roguelite platformer called Death or Treat and thoroughly enjoyed its cheeky anti-social-media storyline. Folly of the Wizards looks to capture a similar blend of humor and challenge within the same genre space. The mix of roguelite progression and platforming always grabs my attention, and this game seems to offer plenty of fun and variety with its branching options and unpredictable runs. I am definitely interested in jumping into this one.
