Maiden of the Dark Kickstarter Campaign Live NOW!
TigerChainsaw Studios has revealed that the Kickstarter campaign for Maiden of the Dark, a retro-inspired action-platformer for the Game Boy, will be launching soon.
Inspired by Game Boy classics such as Operation C and Return of the Ninja, Maiden of the Dark takes players across ten perilous levels, including spiked caves, burning villages, and rushing waterways. Success depends on mastering enemy patterns, defeating bosses, and perfecting platforming precision, all set to a heavy-metal soundtrack by Ryan “OGM” Scotson.
Set in rural Japan, the story follows a desperate village conquered by the warlord Zankoku and his two shoguns. As their last hope, the villagers summon the Maiden of the Dark through forbidden magic. Bound to the night, she must defeat Zankoku’s army within ten hours of darkness before sunrise removes her powers. Armed with a katana capable of cutting through both men and demons, she moves through the shadows to reclaim peace before dawn.
The cast features the Maiden, an ancient spirit of the night, and several formidable foes: Yoroi, a defensive shogun strategist; Shiruku, a swift and ruthless claw-wielder; and Zankoku, the tyrannical warlord. A mysterious figure named Teixeira, representing love, grants a special reward to players who discover them.
Developed by a four-person team at TigerChainsaw Studios, the project combines storytelling by TigerChainsaw, programming by RetroRoo, pixel art by PixelChunga, and music by Scotson. Maiden of the Dark is the studio’s debut title, aiming for a physical cartridge release compatible with multiple Game Boy systems. The game’s development is nearly finished, and with successful crowdfunding, production is expected to begin within 60 days of the campaign’s completion.

My Thoughts
One of our listeners happens to be friends with someone on the TigerChainsaw Studios team, so naturally, we want to help shine a light on Maiden of the Dark! It always warms my heart to see independent developers put their passion and creativity into projects that reach players around the world.
Watching the trailer instantly gave me Legend of Kage vibes from the NES era. For an indie team, this action-platformer looks impressively polished, with diverse environments, enemies, and fast-paced combat that feel right at home on a retro handheld. The heavy-metal soundtrack adds even more energy to the experience. I’d love to see Maiden of the Dark find the success it deserves. Check out the Kickstarter when it goes live and help bring this nostalgic Game Boy adventure to life!
