New Starship Troopers Game Announced from Warhammer Devs

During this week’s PC Gaming Show Most Wanted Livestream, the developers behind Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun announced Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War, a retro-themed first-person shooter set in the universe of the classic film series. Developed by Auroch Digital and published by DotEmu, who just released Marvel Cosmic Invasion earlier this week, the game is expected to launch in early 2026.

Set 25 years after the events of the original 1997 film, Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War puts players in the boots of the Mobile Infantry as they battle the Arachnid threat across human colonies. Players will join veteran soldiers General Johnny Rico and Major Samantha ‘Sammy’ Dietz on a brand-new campaign, experiencing humanity’s struggle to reclaim territory from the relentless Bug menace. Once-thriving colonies now lie in ruins, giving players a firsthand look at the high-stakes war for survival in this action-packed, retro-inspired shooter.

Casper Van Dien will once again reprise his role as Johnny Rico, continuing to serve as the face of the franchise.

The Only Good Bug, Is A Dead Bug!

From the reveal trailer and early screenshots, Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War embraces a retro visual style reminiscent of late ’90s and early 2000s first-person shooters, evoking the look and feel of PS1 and PS2-era games. The pixelated textures, chunky character models, and fast-paced action all pay homage to the classic shooters of that period, while still delivering modern gameplay polish and responsiveness.

Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War is expected to launch in early 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.

My Thoughts

I’ve been covering Starship Troopers: Extermination for over a year, by reviewing the base game and reporting on updates. In each of those articles, I’ve been wishing and clamoring for more single-player content. Yet here we are, over one year later since its 1.0 launch and still none has appeared.

Now, it looks like my wish is finally being fulfilled with a separate game from a different studio, featuring a totally different vibe and aesthetic. And you know what? I’ll take it. By embracing a retro style reminiscent of the late ’90s, Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War feels like the long-lost marketing tie-in the original film never got.
