Yooka-Replaylee Flaps Onto Nintendo Switch 2, Kicking Off Retail Edition Countdown
Yooka Replaylee, developed by Playtonic Games and published by PM Studios, has released a new demo today on Nintendo Switch 2. Players can glide, roll, and tongue whip through this early look at the game. Progress from the demo will carry into the full version. The team also launched the 10 day countdown to the physical Retail Edition. It arrives on December 18, 2025, and includes the game, a collectible map poster, and a character sticker pack.
Playtonic Games and PM Studios marked the occasion with a new Accolade Trailer. It highlights global praise for Yooka Replaylee. Michael Yum, CEO of PM Studios, shared that the goal was to create something meaningful for players. He described the demo as a small taste of the world and the Retail Edition as a full holiday celebration for families and fans.
Yooka Replaylee rebuilds and enhances the original Yooka Laylee. It brings back the beloved 3D indie platforming collectathon with new remixed challenges, returning favorites, and a larger map. The adventure features open world exploration, an expanded currency system, deeper customization, and a full orchestral soundtrack. Players join Yooka and Laylee on a refreshed journey
What We Can Expect
- A Story Retold: Experience the original tale in a new storybook-style presentation, with fresh sequences added throughout.
- Upgraded graphics: With an art and animations overhaul and enhanced performance and resolution, the favorite buddy duo has never looked or moved better.
- Rextro Bytes Back: The old minigames are no more! Instead you’ll jump in as Rextro the dinosaur and undertake brand-new isometric platforming challenges for collectible rewards.
- New collectible currency: Capital B’s inept minions have dropped their hard-earned Q.U.I.D.S. all over the place. Collect the official currency of the Hivory Towers to spend with the world’s most loveable vending machine.
- Build your own playstyle: Tonics are back with all new flavors! With the option to equip multiple game-changing enhancements, you can truly customize your playstyle. And as if that wasn’t enough, Vendi has new lines of merchandise for the modern fashionable adventurer.
- Navigate the world easily: Yooka-Replaylee introduces a brand-new map and collectibles tracker, making it easier for you to traverse the environments, track NPC and Pagie locations along with tracking their progress. We’re also introducing a new character in the form of (book)Mark who acts as your warp point and guide.
- Revamped controls and camera: The buddy-duo now has access to their entire move set from the start of the game and can sequence the moves together a lot smoother than in the original game. This, combined with the revamped camera controls, makes Yooka-Replaylee feel like a more modern, snappier experience, while also directly addressing player feedback on the original game.
- A dreamy orchestral soundtrack: The original score from famed video game composers Grant Kirkhope (Banjo-Kazooie) and David Wise (Donkey Kong Country) returns but as a beautifully arranged orchestral score. Now seriously, clean out those ears!
My Thoughts
This is exactly the kind of update that gets me excited for a platformer revival. A demo for Yooka Replaylee on Nintendo Switch 2 with save carryover is the perfect way to test the waters without losing progress. I also like when a studio puts effort into the physical side of things, and the map poster plus sticker pack make the December 18 Retail Edition feel like more than a standard release. The Accolade Trailer adds to the sense that this rebuilt version of Yooka Laylee is earning real praise, and everything described here points to a cleaner, bigger, and more charming experience. A larger map, new currency, customization options, and a full orchestral soundtrack all sound like great reasons to revisit Yooka and Laylee. I am ready to give this demo a spin and see how much the improvements shine. Check out the trailer below!
