CRKD Announces Nitro Deck 2

After the 2025 Game Awards, CRKD™ announced the Nitro Deck 2, the direct sequel of the original CRKD Nitro Deck, a popular accessory for the Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED.

Nitro Deck Key Features and Improvements

The Nitro Deck 2 builds upon the original, delivering superior comfort, precision, and performance. Based on community feedback, the engineers at CRKD have made the following changes:

  • Zero Stick Drift: Introducing CRKD CaptiStick™ Technology, the Nitro Deck 2 features capacitor-based thumbsticks that are immune to magnetic interference and utilize a zero-contact design. This ensures drift-free precision, ultra-responsive control, and significantly extends the life of the sticks. Players can also adjust the stick resistance for a customized feel.
  • Enhanced Ergonomics: The design has been refined with sculpted contours for a noticeably improved in-hand feel. A key upgrade is the new offset right thumbstick, promoting a more natural and ergonomic grip during extended gaming sessions.
  • Secure and Easy Installation: A marked improvement over the slide-in mechanism, the Nitro Deck 2 now features a retractable locking-dial located on the rubberized backplate. Gamers simply set the console tablet in place and tighten the dial for a secure fit, minimizing the risk to the console hardware.
  • Increased Customization and Control:
    • New Shoulder Buttons: The controller retains the useful programmable back buttons and adds new L2 and R2 secondary shoulder buttons for even more configuration options.
    • Digital Triggers: The triggers have been upgraded to smooth, tactile digital triggers.
    • Swappable D-Pad System: A new swappable D-Pad system debuts, with two accessory packs offering four different styles (including all-black and a metallic CRKD set). Stick tops remain swappable and compatible with existing CRKD packs.
  • Durable Design and Functionality: The Nitro Deck 2 now includes a more durable metal kickstand. It also features motion control compatibility and adjustable rumble, which, along with “Deadzone Mode” and “Turbo Mode”, allows users to fine-tune their performance.

Versatility and Backward Compatibility

The Nitro Deck 2 is built to seamlessly bridge hardware generations, offering extensive compatibility:

  • Future-Ready: The retractable locking mechanism ensures a secure fit for both the Nintendo Switch 2 and, via the included legacy adapter, the original Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED models.
  • Multi-Platform Controller: Thanks to integrated Bluetooth® technology, the Nitro Deck 2 can function as a wireless or wired controller (using the included U Adapter for low-latency wired play) for PC, Mobile Devices, Smartphones, and Smart TVs, even when the console is docked.
  • Dedicated Pro-Style Controller: When the console is removed, an included centerpiece can be installed, allowing the Nitro Deck 2 to be used as a dedicated pro-style controller.

True Collection System

The Nitro Deck 2 remains part of the True Collection System. Gamers can tap their phone to reveal the product’s rarity rank, register it, and claim it as part of their collection. The companion CRKD CTRL app provides tools for personalization, including remapping, calibration, rumble tuning, and firmware updates.

Personal Thoughts

OG Nitro Deck
(Not mine, but this is the one I owned, good ‘ol grey)

The original Nitro Deck addressed a key issue for adult users playing the Switch handheld: the lack of adequate grip for larger hands. However, the weird un-offset right thumbstick was ultimately a deal-breaker. I passed it on to my nephew, who absolutely loved the chunky and solid feel of the controller.

Another significant flaw was the method for removing the Switch. It required using a small pusher “button” to initiate the tablet’s movement, followed by pressing on the front of the screen to guide it past the lower lip of the case. This removal process always gave me the heebie-geebies.

The Nitro Deck+, a later release, addressed a number of these issues, though not the difficulty of removal. I found the Steam Deck-inspired design super interesting and believe it likely would have corrected the ergonomic concerns I had with the original. However, I ultimately did not purchase or try this version (for reasons lost to time).

Nitro Deck+

The updated Nitro Deck 2 appears very interesting. The adjustable back, reminiscent of the Backbone Pro and Razer Kishi, raises concerns about it being overly complex and impractical for the long term. Given the competitive price point compared to the alternatives and the commitment of CRKD changes (specifically relocating the thumbstick), I intend to try this one out.
