ILA: A Frosty Glide | Switch Review

Unsurprisingly, as I have gotten older, my time to play games has decreased dramatically. Either due to my full-time job, being a husband, or being a father, it’s challenging to sink 50+ hours into the open-world games I love. While I still enjoy playing those games, I occasionally need a short, cozy experience I can complete in a few hours. ILA: A Frosty Glide, a 3D platformer from Magic Rain Studios, provided a satisfying, 2-3-hour experience I very much needed.

Come Back, Coco

ILA is a young witch on a mission to find her lost cat, Coco, the last connection she had with her mother before she passed. ILA is drawn to a snowy island, where she believes Coco is. As ILA searches the island, she continues to feel her mom’s presence and discovers what makes it special.

Skateboarding…With a Twist

To find Coco, ILA must use her broom to ascend the mountain and solve puzzles. However, ILA cannot simply fly using this broom. Instead, she can leap and glide across the island, as well as ride it like a skateboard. As she progresses up the mountain, she gains the ability to take more leaps, which helps her get across longer gaps. And occasionally, she will find magical rings that will either refill her leaps or give a boost to get across even longer gaps. It is a refreshing take on the skateboarding mechanic.

Frosty Glide

The platforming is rarely challenging, which is by no means a knock on this game. It wants you to experience the game without the frustration. Even if you accidentally fall to a lower level, you can jump on a mushroom to get back to a height from which you were previously.

Visuals and Performance

ILA: A Frosty Glide has a bright voxel art style. The island looks very cozy with a snowy landscape that has me missing colder climates. It might not win any awards for best graphics, but it definitely has a charming look and feel.

Overall, the performance was excellent. I did have one issue: I flew to a spot I couldn’t glide back from, so I had to restart the game. Luckily, it was only a 15-minute backtrack. Otherwise, controlling the camera could be frustrating, but that was extremely rare and did not hinder my gameplay.

ILA: A Frosty Glide Final Verdict

ILA: A Frosty Glide is a cozy, 3D platformer that is simple in both its gameplay and its visuals. Overall, it performs well with only a few hiccups that hardly hinder the experience. If you are looking for a short experience with gameplay mechanics that feel like skateboarding, but with a twist, ILA: A Frosty Glide is worth your time.
