Whirlight – No Time To Trip | 2nd PC Demo Review

Whirlight is the upcoming point and click adventure game by Imaginarylab, whose previous game, Willy Morgan and the Secret of Bonetown, I got to review for The Gaming Outsider in 2020. Several years later, in 2024, Imaginarylab released a demo of their new game called Whirlight. It had the signature flair and feel of Willy Morgan, but it was clear that this studio had progressed a lot in the years. I even got to do a short interview with the founder about the game. I had played the demo, and knowing that the release of the game was still a long time away, filed the title away in my brain for later.

Steam Nextfest

Imagine my surprise when a few days ago Scott approached me and asked me if I wanted to do a short review of the new demo that was coming up for Steam Next Fest. It wasn’t released yet, so I got a scoop. Of course I said yes, and I sat down to play it, once I recovered from a nasty bout of man-flu. I was kind of expecting a variant of the first demo, but what I got was something different. Instead of a confused professor, I was dropped into the boots of a very capable young lady, locked away in a vault. I had no idea how she got there, but that didn’t matter because it was clear that I had to get her out. In true point and click adventure style, I used the objects at my disposal to solve the puzzles and I made my way to the end of the demo, thoroughly impressed.

Good or Great?

A good demo makes you interested in playing the game; a great demo makes you want to play that game NOW! This was a great demo, because it rocketed Whirlight to the top of my list of games to play when they release. This felt more like playing a chapter of a finished product than a demo, and the cliffhanger at the end only made my desire to play this stronger. The graphics, animations and sound are great, and I caught myself humming the music when I went downstairs to get a drink. The puzzles were the right amount of challenging and logical, but also managed to surprise me several times and make me laugh.

No Spoilers

The demo takes about 50-60 minutes to finish and I highly recommend you check it out. What I like a lot is that it gives no spoilers about the game but does allow you to experience the gameplay. If the whole game is like these two demos then we are in for a treat later this year! I wish the devs at Imaginarylab all the best in finishing the game, and I will be the first in line to buy and play it.

Whirlight is releasing in 2026, the Steam demo is available from February 11 onward.

This review is based on a PC demo copy of Whirlight – No Time To Trip provided by Homerun PR for coverage purposes. As of the time of this writing, it is exclusive to this platform.

Tomas Becks

1984 was a magical year for Tomas, because that’s when his father brought home the legendary Commodore 64 and a lifelong love affair with games and especially adventure games began. He was late to the party with consoles, but now he uses his PS4 for more than playing blu-rays of Marvel movies. He’s also a fervent mobile gamer, but his heart still belongs mostly to the stories of his beloved adventure games. Besides games and movies he’s also a fan of board games, tabletop roleplaying games, comics, craft beers and liquorice. He’s a long time listener of both the Gaming Outsider and the Hollywood Outsider and made his podcasting debut with the GO crew in August 2018 on his first visit to the US.
