Move Or Freeze: Survival Game ‘EverRail’ Releases First Public Demo
Aesir Interactive, through their Icebird Studios development team, have announced EverRail, an upcoming open-world action survival crafting game. This upcoming game will be playable for the first time during Steam Next Fest. Set in a frozen procedural wasteland, the game tasks players with managing a massive battery-powered train where momentum is the only thing keeping the cold at bay. The free demo, featuring multiplayer co-op, will be available on PC via Steam or Epic Games from February 23rd through March 2nd. Following the demo, EverRail is scheduled for an Early Access launch later this spring.
The experience centers on “Tricore Gameplay,” a system that forces players to master different modes of traversal while scavenging for resources to keep the train’s battery charged. In a high-stakes twist on permadeath, the passenger manifest acts as a life counter; if a player falls, they immediately take over as a new passenger until the manifest hits zero and the journey ends permanently.
What We Can Expect
-
On Rails (The Train): Players must steer, upgrade, and maintain a massive, high-speed train. It serves as a fortress and lifeline in motion. The engine generates power only while in motion, creating constant pressure to push forward while managing resources, repairs, and passenger needs.
-
In Air (The Glider): Unlike survival games that keep players grounded, EverRail utilizes verticality. Players can take to the skies by deploying a glider for third-person scouting, harvesting energy resources and uncovering secrets hidden in the frostbitten landscape. Aerial reconnaissance is essential to planning safe routes and keeping the train’s battery charged.
-
On Foot (Expeditions): To gather resources and rescue survivors, players must stop the engine and brave the cold before it overtakes them. Third-person roguelike expeditions send players into abandoned settlements, frozen forests and lost ruins filled with enemies, environmental hazards and high-risk rewards.
My Thoughts
As soon as I saw the trailer, I was reminded of the fantastic film (and then episodic show) Snowpiercer. Although EverRail doesn’t appear to have such a dark power source involved. Instead, we have a really interesting variety of gameplay. The passenger manifest system is a brilliant way to handle permadeath, making every rescue feel like a genuine extension of your survival time. Whether playing alone or with up to three friends, EverRail sounds like a fantastic game for anyone to enjoy!
