iLive ISB184B Portable Bluetooth Multimedia Sound Bar/Speaker | Hardware Review

We don’t often get a chance to review hardware here at The Gaming Outsider, but whenever we do I jump at the chance. Recently Asylum sent me a sample unit of Vizio‘s latest portable Bluetooth sound bar/speaker. The ISB184B may be small in size, but it packs a decent punch. I’m pleasantly surprised with the results, and this item has become a staple in my classroom for more than one reason.

On More Than One Occasion

I’ve been DJing for over twenty-five years now, providing music for weddings, school dances, and corporate functions. I’ll be direct here. This isn’t going to replace a full-on rig designed to fill a gymnasium. This is more of something used for around the house or on the deck during a pool party. Not only does it provide quality sound, but it also has multicolored lights to make it more attractive than your standard speaker.

Versatility is another big selling point with this speaker. As the title suggests, you can use it as a Bluetooth speaker very easily. It connects even faster than my AirPods. You’re not limited to that function, however. You also have the ability to use a wired connection for whatever you need. The wireless option, however, didn’t  give me any latency issues whatsoever.

My Uses

As mentioned above, I’ve actually used this device in my classroom on a regular basis. It’s perfect for playing music in a small room with 20-30 people. The lights make it extra fun for my third graders.

On top of that, I even threw a mini dance party in my classroom as a reward for students with good behavior. I set this on top of my DJ light bar and played music from my phone. The kids had an absolute blast, and they  ask me almost every week if they can have another dance party. It’s my new favorite activity for my “Fun Fridays” at school.

The only real negative I have is that the charging cable that comes with the speaker is entirely too short. This keeps the cost down, however, and I know pretty much everybody has a USB-C cable at home anyway. So this is very much a minor annoyance. You also won’t be able to use this for larger rooms or parties, but that’s not what it’s designed for. For smaller groups or individual use, it’s fantastic.

Live ISB184B Portable Bluetooth Multimedia Sound Bar Final Verdict

The most attractive thing about this product is its price. I’ve paid much more for far less in terms of quality, ease of use, and extra features. Could you use this for your entertainment center at home? Probably, but only for a smaller setup. More than likely you’ll want some kind of surround sound system to get the full experience with your favorite games. But for music around the house or perhaps as an outdoor speaker when watching TV in the summer, this is a solid deal. I’m very happy with this speaker, and I think you will be as well.
