INDIE WORLD SHOWCASE: Nintendo Still Celebrates Innovation

In a short and sweet Indie World Showcase, Nintendo reaffirmed its pledge to be a home for independent developers, proving that the Switch 2 will carry forward the strong tradition of championing creative and unique gaming experiences. After the Wii U era suffered from limited third-party support, Nintendo learned its lesson and committed to embracing independent studios to support its new console, the Switch. That approach paid off, and this latest Direct confirms that commitment remains strong and will continue that legacy on Switch 2 with a fresh lineup from small studios poised to enrich the platform’s future. Here’s a rundown of everything that was shown in this short, but content-packed presentation.

Mina the Hollower

The show started with another trailer for Mina the Hollower, the latest title from Shovel Knight developer Yacht Club Games. First announced earlier this year at Summer Game Fest, this new 8-bit title looks to be yet another hit for the studio, this time with a horror theme. And what good timing this will be as it releases this Halloween for both Switch and Switch 2. A playable demo is available now.

Well Dweller

This looks to be yet another entry in the ever-popular Metroi….*ahem* sorry…in the ever popular 2D GEAR GATED ADVENTURE genre. This time you play as a bird in a surreal looking environment. Coming to Nintendo Switch sometime next year, 2026.

Neverway

This nightmarish life-sim RPG comes from Brazilian studio Coldblood Inc., co-created by the pixel artist behind Celeste and featuring an original soundtrack by the composer of Fez and Hyper Light Drifter. It plays like Stardew Valley reimagined through a Halloween lens — eerie, unsettling, and full of surprises.Coming to Nintendo Switch next year 2026.

Herdling

From the publisher of Firewatch comes Herdling, a new adventure from the creators of the Far series. Guide a herd through treacherous, but breathtaking scenery, including fog forests, snowy plateaus and forgotten valleys. If you enjoy games like the Far, or Journey, this looks to be in the same vein as those titles. The herd will be making its way onto Nintendo Switch on August 21st, 2025. Pre-orders now available.

Is This Seat Taken?

A charming puzzle game from Poti Poti Studios, where you organize groups of people based on their preferences, in settings like restaurants and airplanes — blending logic with lighthearted social dynamics. It launched the same day as this presentation and is available now for Nintendo Switch.

Little Kitty, Big City – Picture Purrfect Update

In Little Kitty, Big City, you’re a mischievous cat causing chaos and chasing curiosities in a bustling urban world. The upcoming free “Picture Purrfect Update” adds a new area, more ways to customize your kitty, and even more photo mode fun. The free update drops later this year.

Content Warning

From developer Landfall comes Content Warning, a creepy first-person online co-op game. Grab your cameras, squad up with friends, and film as many wild shenanigans as you can in this eerie adventure. Coming to Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 in 2026.

BALL X PIT

From Kenny Sun Studios comes Ball X Pit (or simply Ball Pit), an action rogue-lite inspired by the developer’s personal favorites like Holdown, Vampire Survivors, and Loop Hero. Featuring a low-poly pixel art style and a soundtrack by composer Amos Roddy that perfectly locks you into the rhythm of the action, Ball X Pit launches on Nintendo Switch on October 15th, 2025, with a Switch 2 version coming later this year.

Ultimate Sheep Raccoon

A charming looking physics based 2D side-scrolling racing game where you build courses, race as cute animals doing tricks on bikes, featuring 8-player online co-op and cross-platform play. Coming to Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 Winter 2025.

Glaciered

From Japanese developer Studio Snowblind, Glaciered is an upcoming action-adventure game set 65 million years in the future, after an apocalyptic ice age known as the Everwinter has wiped out life on the Earth’s surface. In this frozen future, birds and other avian species have evolved into the Tuai, a hyper-intelligent underwater civilization. Inspired by the lead designer’s experience with snowy winters in his hometown of Hokkaido, Japan, Glaciered blends underwater exploration with melee combat, offering a chilly twist on games like Ecco the Dolphin. It’s coming to Nintendo Switch 2 this holiday season as a timed exclusive.

My Thoughts

Like I said, this presentation was short and sweet, running just over fifteen minutes, but it managed to pack in a solid number of announcements and updates. I’ll be honest, none of the games shown really grabbed me. I mainly use my Switch to play the classic Nintendo franchises I grew up with, so my tastes tend to lean more toward those big first-party titles. That said, I still really appreciate the indie developers who get the chance to have their games featured by Nintendo. It’s great to see one of the biggest names in gaming give smaller studios a platform, which seems to be continuing into the Switch 2. Even if none of these games are quite my thing, I can still admire the creativity and effort behind them.
