4Divinity Announces The Defiant

Publisher 4Divinity and developer Hoothanes announced The Defiant, a story-driven first-person shooter set in World War II’s Asian theatre. This title moves away from the typical Western European and North African settings found in most historical shooters. Instead, it places players in the heart of China’s War of Resistance against Japan. A veteran team of filmmakers and game developers built the project in Unreal Engine 5. Their goal is to offer a cinematic, authentic look at a conflict rarely seen in video games. The Defiant launches soon on PC via Steam and consoles.

The game’s narrative unfolds across occupied villages, frozen forests, and urban zones. Players experience the gritty reality of guerrilla warfare through stealth, sniping, and large-scale assaults. The developers prioritized a human-centered story that focuses on the emotional weight of survival. Even the weapons serve as historical artifacts. The game features era-specific firearms like the Hanyang Type 88 and the Mauser C96 to maintain historical accuracy.

What We Can Expect

  • An Unexplored Perspective: Experience a cinematic narrative set during China’s War of Resistance against Japan, a chapter of World War II rarely seen in the FPS genre.

  • Dynamic Guerrilla Warfare: Navigate unpredictable missions that transition between urban espionage, stealth, code-breaking, and high-intensity firefights without traditional frontlines.

  • Authentic Historical Arsenal: Wield meticulously recreated weapons of the era, including the Bergmann submachine gun and other firearms rooted in China’s wartime history.

My Thoughts

It is truly refreshing to see a World War II title break away from the usual locations we have visited dozens of times before. The Defiant shines a light on the Asian theatre and China’s War of Resistance, a massive part of history that has rarely, if ever, been represented in mainstream video games. There is something fascinating about combining these brand-new environments with classic 1940s-era weaponry, and the lack of modern technology really emphasizes the grit and tension of guerrilla warfare. With its unique perspective and authentic atmosphere, this is the kind of game that could easily wind up on everyone’s radar very soon.
