IO Interactive and Amazon MGM Studios have released the second installment in a multi-part “Beyond the Light” developer diary series for 007: First Light. This installment gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at how iconic characters, including James Bond, are being reinterpreted ahead of the game’s launch.
The episode features key cast members, including Patrick Gibson as James Bond, Kiera Lester as Moneypenny, Alastair McKenzie as Q, and Noemie Nakai as the new character Agent Roth. They discuss their roles and how both iconic and original characters are being reinterpreted for a fresh Bond origin story, offering insight into the relationships and emotional dynamics that shape the game’s narrative.
His Majesty’s Secret Service
The episode also includes insights from IO Interactive’s development team. Martin Emborg, Narrative and Cinematics Director, and Beatrice Harty, Lead and Senior Character Artist, discuss how story, cinematics, and character design intersect to create believable and expressive characters. From early concept art to performance capture, the team shares how they bring both familiar and new characters to life in 007: First Light.
Beatrice Harty, Lead Character Artist, explains, ‘We wanted the characters to feel human and expressive at every step.’ Patrick Gibson adds, ‘Playing Bond in this origin story meant helping ground the relationships and emotional moments.’ Together, these insights highlight the care taken to bring both familiar and new characters to life.
007: First Light is scheduled to launch on May 27th, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox ROG Ally, and PC. It is available for pre-order now.
My Thoughts
We’ve had previous original Bond games in the past. NightFire, Everything or Nothing, and even Blood Stone are all bangers in their own right, but those were all still anchored to a cinematic license of their respective eras.
007: First Light is different, this will be the first ever original game in every sense of the definition. Previous titles borrowed from films; this one charts its own course, drawing from the novels and creating its own world. As each day passes, the more hyped I am for the first major James Bond video game in almost 14 years, longer than GTA 5 and 6. Eat it, Rockstar!!
