Harlem Globetrotters Headline New Retro Basketball Game

Acclaim Entertainment has announced Super Basketball Classics Featuring the World Famous Harlem Globetrotters, a retro-inspired basketball game coming to PC and consoles. The project is launching as part of the centennial celebrations for the legendary team. The Harlem Globetrotters are marking 100 years of globe-spanning trick-shots, comedy routines, and basketball showmanship throughout 2026.

Rather than aim for the realism of sports titles like the NBA 2K series, this game leans heavily into old school arcade design, a la NBA JAM. The developers say it draws inspiration from 8-bit and 16-bit basketball titles, pick-up-and-play matches, exaggerated dunks, and over the top trick shots that fits perfectly with the Globetrotters’ brand of comedic antics and on-the-court theatrics.

My Thoughts

The Harlem Globetrotters are the perfect fit for a retro-inspired arcade basketball game. Their entire brand is built around exaggerated trick shots, comedy routines, and theatrical showmanship. It lines up perfectly with the over-the-top style of classic arcade hoops games like NBA Jam. Instead of chasing realism, those games leaned into spectacle, and that’s exactly what the Globetrotters have been doing on the court for nearly a century.

I even had the chance to see them live back in the 1990s when I was about ten years old. Before the game started, kids were invited down onto the court to shoot hoops, and I still remember getting free throw pointers from the team’s coach. It was one of those childhood sports memories that sticks with you, which makes the idea of a Globetrotters-themed arcade basketball game feel like a surprisingly natural fit.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be whistlin’ Sweet Georgia Brown for the rest of the day!
