Mind Diver | PS5 Review
I’m always on the hunt for a good mystery game that has deduction elements. I’m also a sucker for a good story about a relationship and its complexities. Indoor Sunglasses’ Mind Diver combines both of these into a fascinating concoction. I was held captive by the unwinding story throughout my approximately three hour playthrough. If you’re looking for a game to grab you and refuse to let you go until the end credits, then Mind Diver is beckoning you.
Eternal Sunshine
You are placed in the shoes of a Diver, a person who can enter another individual’s mind and access their memories. You’re tasked by the police with diving into a woman named Lina’s brain. Her boyfriend Sebastian has gone missing and Lina’s memories are rapidly disappearing. It’s up to you to find and restore her recollections and hopefully solve the mystery surrounding Sebastian. You also uncover the dynamics of the couple’s relationship and dig up both juicy and shocking revelations.
The narrative is so compelling and had me hooked. I NEEDED to know what happened to Sebastian and how Lina’s relationship with him played out. Were they happy? Did something rock their connection? Was she somehow involved in his disappearance? I had to find out, and found the time slipping by as I uncovered more and more revelations.
The Spotless Mind
Your main goal in Mind Diver is to travel (more accurately, swim) through regions of Lina’s subconscious and find Memory Holes. These gaps in Lina’s, well, memory are filled and restored by placing an object or even person into them. To do this, you have a special gun that can suck up pretty much anything in the environment and then transfer that into the Memory Hole. It’s your job to deduce what specific item or human needs to be inserted, and I found this to be quite challenging at points. You need to listen to conversations and investigate objects around you. You might even have to go to a different area in the region to find what you need.
I was stumped a few times and found myself wanting to pull my hair out, but I eventually solved these puzzles. Most of the solutions are logical, but a couple of them didn’t really make sense to me. I also found the puzzle solving to be a bit repetitive after a while. There’s no change in how you go about completing these tasks, and it started to feel a bit rinse and repeat. The intriguing story was what kept pushing me forward through the repetition.
Memories That Sticks With You
I found the graphical style of Mind Diver to be captivating. It’s a bit rough around the edges but that’s what drew me in. It’s stylish in a unique way and it begs to be seen. The sound effects are also excellent and immersed me further in the world. What really impressed me was the voice acting, though. The actors sounded so natural and they helped to really immerse me in the relationship between Lina and Sebastian. Even the side characters are exceptionally acted. It’s evident so much care went into this game to make it as engrossing as possible.
The Final Verdict
Mind Diver is a fascinating game that has you exploring both the disappearance of a man and the relationship between him and the woman who’s brain you’re tasked with exploring and restoring. The puzzle solving mechanic of the game does become a bit repetitive, but its focus on deductive reasoning keeps things interesting. The story was what really captivated me, though. I desperately wanted to uncover what happened between this couple and where the boyfriend ended up. The art style is unique and I found the voice acting to be impeccable. If you’re looking for a compelling puzzle game that requires you to sleuth, Mind Diver should be on your radar.
