Horizon: Zero Dawn is The Gaming Outsider’s Best Game of 2017

After an excellent year of some of the best video game releases this generation so far, it was extremely difficult for us to select a game that earned our top honors. After a three hour discussion on the subject, the GO crew finally came to a conclusion. Horizon: Zero Dawn, the spectacular open world adventure title by Gorilla Games, is officially our 2017 game of the year winner.

If you have not listened to our game of the year special, you can check it out below or grab it from one of the many podcast platforms listed to the right.

It was almost a clean sweep among the four hosts of The Gaming Outsider, but Zach threw us for a loop with Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice as his top pick. Scott, Josh and Robby all went with Horizon as well as our community, who chose the game as their best game of 2017 as well when polled on our Facebook group.

The reason Horizon became the clear winner was pretty simple. It had all of the pieces that we look for in a great game, and executed all of them almost perfectly. We adored the narrative, Aloy as a protagonist, the sheer amount of content in the game and the creative ways to tackle the obstacles thrown at the player. Horizon was also one of the best looking and most technically impressive titles that landed in our laps in 2017. For us, Horizon: Zero Dawn was a no-brainer as game of the year.

So what were our runner ups, you ask? Here’s our collective top five picks:

  1. Horizon: Zero Dawn
  2.  The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

  3.  Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

  4.  Resident Evil VII
  5.  Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus

Thank you again to everyone who listens and supports The Gaming Outsider on a yearly basis! We’re excited to deliver new and exciting content in 2018 and give you all our thoughts and opinions on all of the latest titles coming out this year. See you on the next episode!
