Solo | PC Review
When the trailer for Solo by Team Gotham was released, I immediately fell in love with the bright, colorful, Wind Waker-like graphics and calming soundtrack. I couldn’t wait for the game to be released, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Solo is an introspective puzzler that encourages the player to reflect on their previous experiences with love. The shadows of your beloved and the totems that you find on each archipelago ask you deep questions that, in turn, help you identify your destiny. These questions are definitely thought-provoking and eye-opening.
As you set sail and journey from archipelago to archipelago, you are faced with a series of puzzles for the main quest. But there are some side tasks, such as watering the gardens of your heart, bridging the gap between two animal lovers, creating bonds with creatures, and learning the love songs of your soul. When you complete these side tasks, you unlock different achievements. The puzzles involve different types of boxes that you manipulate to climb cliffs, create bridges, or float to an area that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to reach. They build in complexity as you progress through the game.
By far, my favorite puzzles were the shadow puzzles. Inside a dark lighthouse, with just a glimmer of light, you have to create shadows with boxes to fit a specific pattern. I can’t really describe why I found them so satisfying but I really did. There are multiple solutions to each of the puzzles and I do have to admit getting frustrated a few times. Each archipelago has a main puzzle and once solved, you are able to activate a lighthouse to guide your way to your next destination.
Solo Final Verdict
Are you ready to sail across the seas and find the hidden treasures inside your heart? How do you define what it means to love another? What are you willing to sacrifice for love? Will you travel far and wide to follow your heart? Or, do your find comfort in taking the journey alone? Discover the answers to these questions and more by playing Solo.
