Kaet Must Die! | PC Review

Kaet Must Die! is an indie horror game by Strength in Numbers Studios, Inc. It tells the story of a girl named Kaetherine, a girl with extremely powerful mind powers. She wakes up in a dank sewer to find that all of these powers have been stripped of her. This is where our story begins. If you don’t pick up any of the paper slips throughout the game, it unfortunately ends.

Kaet Must Die!, while being a horror game, is really a puzzle game at it’s core. There are a total of ten levels that you have to traverse while dodging enemies to collect different points. This is where the game gets its self-proclaimed ‘very hard to beat’ label that it announces when you load the game. Each level has a time limit, so if you don’t complete the objective in time, you lose. If you get jump-scared and hit by an enemy a single time, you lose. It is extremely unforgiving, and at first, that is the game’s worst quality. As all puzzle games go, however, it takes a bit of patience. Once you figure out the way the game wants you to play, it becomes very easy to navigate and complete in the time limit.

Kaet Must Die!

The sound design is very creepy and immersive, but soon loses that flair due to its repetitive nature. The controls are also very hard to get used to at first. As a Steam game, Kaet Must Die! allows you to choose between mouse-and-keyboard or controller. As much as I am in the controller camp for PC games, I cannot recommend using one for this game. The controls are very confusing, and I found myself still getting jumbled even halfway through the second and third level. The button layout for mouse-and-keyboard isn’t much better, though. So I would say pick your poison on that front.

As if this doesn’t sound hard enough, the game will add new elements at the beginning of new levels (such as the ability to stun enemies by using blood). This doesn’t help the confusion of the button layout at all. Even if that was better though, the game doesn’t control the best. I do believe it adds to the challenge of the puzzles, however, and I think that makes a strong case for this game.

The Steam page claims that Kaet Must Die! has 30+ hours of content. While I want to believe that, I don’t see how this game can be stretched that far.
