Chris B’s Top Ten Personal Favorite Games of 2018

It’s time for a year in review for 2018, and the amount of incredible games that were released is breathtaking. I figured why not give a little synopsis of why these games are my personal favorites of the year.

I had over fifty total games to consider that I had completed or put a significant amount of time into during the year. With that said, I have some quick honorable mentions before getting to my list:

Honorable Mention #1 – Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Hellblade is a wonderfully dark and beautifully crafted story and world. I was astonished at the storytelling and themes touched on through the course of this game.

Honorable Mention #2 – A Way Out

A Way Out

A Way Out is a game that almost actually made my Top Ten, but fell short because it is mostly a one and done game. I love couch co-ops, and this game really fills that slot. However, once you have played through it one time, even with a second ending I could not find myself playing it again.

Honorable Mention #3 – Night Trap: 25th Anniversary Edition

Night Trap

Finally, we have come to Night Trap: 25th Anniversary Edition. I know it’s a bad game. However, in the right setting and the right company, this game can be super fun and hilarious to make fun of.

Now that my honorable mentions are taken care of, here’s my top ten personal favorites from 2018:

#10 – Shaq-Fu: A Legend Reborn

Shaq Fu: The Legend Reborn

I am giving the number ten spot to Shaq-Fu: A Legend Reborn. I had an absolute blast playing this game. It’s a fun, cheap game that scratches a nostalgic itch I have for beat ’em ups. I think everyone should give the game a whirl. It does have some glitches here and there, yet I think it’s still so much fun. The DLC is pretty entertaining as well.

#9 – Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2

I know some people are going to say that placing Red Dead Redemption 2 at number 9 is insane. By no means am I saying it’s a bad game. It’s a great game; it just fell short in a few areas for me. Keep in mind, it did make my top ten, and there are 40+ games that didn’t. I love the game, and it is so gorgeous to just stare at the countryside while riding.

#8 – Far Cry 5

Far Cry 5

I really love this game, and the story is crazy. The villainous Seed family still invokes anger when I think of some of the plot points from the game, and I had a ton of fun running around Hope County running and gunning.

#6 and #7 – Moss and Astro Bot Rescue Mission

Moss

The next two games on my list, Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Moss, are almost interchangeable in their positions. Both are near and dear to my heart and some of the most fun I have had in recent years playing platforming games. Astro Bot edges out just ever so slightly, because of some of the challenges presented in the level design and puzzles. Yet to me, Moss has the better artistic style and polish.

#5 – Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Shadow of the Tomb Raider popped up at number 5 on my list. It’s a very well-crafted story, and the puzzles in the game are clever. With solid gameplay and phenomenal action sequences, it’s no surprise why I placed this game where I did.

#4 – Dead Cells

Dead Cells

That brings us to Dead Cells, ranking in at number 4. This wonderful, strange indie title that took me by surprise with its addicting gameplay that made me lose track of time.

#3 – Beat Saber

Beat Saber

Beat Saber comes in at 3. I know it’s not a long game, and many people hate rhythm games these days. However, how many games out there make you feel like a Jedi Master? If you have a VR platform that supports this game and you haven’t played it, you are missing out!

#2 – Marvel’s Spider-Man

Spider-Man

My number 2 is Marvel’s Spider-Man. No big surprise here. The game is amazing and jam packed with so many fun side missions. Not to mention, this is the only game out this year that actually made me shed a tear. The dedication put into Spider-Man was…amazing.

#1 – Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Odyssey

My first draft pick is a bit controversial for me, since it was so close to being my number 2. I love the Assassin’s Creed universe, and this entry was so much fun to play. Plus, the lore behind it was amazing. I spent over 110 hours playing through the game, and I am still not done with all the side missions.

With all things considered this year was insane for the amount of great games, and I had a hard time constructing this list. I am curious, what’s on your list?
