Sonar Beat | iOS Review

I was itching for a new rhythm game to sink my teeth into, and had the hardest time finding one. I was losing all hope in finding a game that would sink its teeth into me. Luckily, Life Zero Games’ Sonar Beat fully scratched that itch and satiated my desires. The game’s mesmeric music, tactile inputs, and beautiful aesthetic completely enraptured me and had me playing for hours on end. If you’re a fan of rhythm games, this should definitely be on your radar (pun fully intended).

Sonar Beat

Get Into the Groove

The basic concept of Sonar Beat is to defend your base by hitting the correct notes in each song. If you fail to properly match up with the beat, invaders will overwhelm your base, and you’ll have to restart the level. There are twelve different songs/stages, and each has their own unique challenges and qualities. The music is simultaneously soothing yet upbeat enough to keep you playing, and each level is absolutely gorgeous. The sonar system is unique and the colorful backgrounds explode with creativity.

You Can’t Stop the Beat

The controls are tight and precise, and every mistake made feels like it’s your fault. The leaderboards encourage you to revisit levels to try to obtain the best score possible so you can have bragging rights over your friends. The music selection, though slim, is varied and perfectly suited for each stage.

This is the perfect game to play during a commute to work, but is also extremely enjoyable in larger chunks. The ability to also save your progress and continue on your phone/PC is a fantastic addition to this already awesome game, You’re constantly encouraged to try to beat your previous score.

Sonar Beat

The only little nitpick is the fact that there are no options to change the difficulty. It would be nice to have the option to alter your difficulty. If you’re finding a song too easy/hard, or if you’re replaying a song and want to challenge yourself, you might be out of luck. Otherwise, this is a top-notch entry into the genre.

Sonar Beat Final Verdict

This is a rhythm game that is highly worth your time. Sonar Beat has incredible replay value, a beautiful graphical design, and songs that will quickly become lodged in your head and stay there. The addictive nature of besting your friends (or yourself) is rewarding, and the ability to switch between platforms is a welcome addition. Rhythm fans, you’ve found your new obsession.
