Smilegate Opens Barcelona Studio to Work on AAA Open-World Game

South Korean developer/publisher Smilegate, the juggernaut behind the global phenomenon Crossfire, has opened up an additional studio. Smilegate Barcelona, as its called, is opening up in the sunny seaside tourist town due to its burgeoning tech industry. Their first title will take advantage of the ever-popular open-word genre, and they’re touting it as a major AAA game.

“As open-world games will continue to dominate the video game industry, we are well-positioned to build upon our team’s experience with talent from around the world, and are ready to create a AAA experience from our new studio in Barcelona,” said Yongil Kim, the CEO of Smilegate Barcelona, Smilegate. “Barcelona’s vibrant and lively youth culture set to the backdrop of gorgeous old world history is a powerful and inspiring combination. The city welcomes creativity and supports technology industries such as ours with a strong infrastructure and high quality of life.”

Crossfire is a kind of popularity rarely seen in FPS games. It has 1 billion players in over 80 countries, has a major movie adaptation on the way, and there’s also the Xbox One version CrossfireX (with a campaign built by Remedy Entertainment). Global phenomenon may have been putting it lightly.

Eye will be peeled towards the future of this studio. If you want to be a part of that future, they’re hiring now.
