Unruly Heroes | iOS Review

Unruly Heroes is a multilevel chapter game where you control four characters on a perilous journey to find the Sacred Parchment and restore order to the world. Each of these characters has their own unique skills of jumping, fighting, and special abilities. Instead of simultaneously piloting them, you can switch between each one by tapping their picture at the top of the screen.

Story mode is quite spectacular and has a thrill that is indescribable. Going from frozen landscapes to roaming the underworld, this game packs a punch. Along your journey, a goddess comes to your aide with witty dialogue and sound advice. Although she doesn’t help you that much, it’s fun seeing her have a good laugh at your expense.

Abilities

Along your path of righteousness, you find new abilities and coins to help upgrade each of the four characters on skills and appearance. Fighting your way through a pack of wolves gives you the ability to control the leader of the wolves, and therefore not be killed by others. Sneaking through the halls of a huge temple, statues come to life to protect the temple from intruders. Eventually, you gain the ability to control these statues to open other doors or find hidden treasure. Finding your way through the underworld, your soul has been taken and now you have no abilities. Once provided with a soul, it can shoot out heavy lasers or machine gun-like bullets to hit targets. These are just a few of the crazy things that Unruly Heroes throws at you.

Mechanics

Unruly Heroes has been out on most platforms for the last two years now. However, I played the port of this game on iOS mobile. The biggest concern I had with that is the controls. At times when I was really getting into a level, my controls started becoming unresponsive or wonky. It would affect gameplay and, like most gamers, I force quit. Eventually having to come back to it, I would overcome that area I was having trouble with, beat it, then have the same issue happen again 3-4 levels later. Making it tough for me to continue picking up the game. I did end up getting this game on my Nintendo Switch and, let me say, it is a lot better with actual buttons than a touch screen.

Overall Thoughts

With this game being out for just over two years, there is no mistake that this game is a great masterpiece. Magic Design Studios has an ace in their pocket with Unruly Heroes and I hope they make a sequel to it or even make games similar. A very underrated game and I wish people would give it a shot. Especially if you like 2D platformer games. Just don’t pick it up on your mobile device if you are an aggressive gamer.
