Capcom Announces Onimusha: Way of the Sword Release Date and Free Demo

During Tuesday’s PlayStation State of Play broadcast on June 2nd, Capcom officially revealed Onimusha: Way of the Sword. This highly anticipated swordplay action game will release on September 25, 2026. It is launching for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Windows. Consequently, fans can dive into the adventure very soon. Furthermore, a free gameplay demo is available now alongside digital pre-orders.

The latest footage explores Mount Oe, a new location outside Kyoto. In this region, a colossal Genma claiming to be the legendary Shuten Doji makes his stronghold. Meanwhile, protagonist Miyamoto Musashi carves his way through the Genma garrison. He wields supernatural speed and strength to traverse the fortress’ defenses. As a result of this intense battle, the trailer provides a glimpse of Musashi harnessing his powers to fully awaken as a powerful Oni Warrior.

Pre-orders are live right now, and players who reserve early will receive the “Sealed Curse” sword skin and “Lion Dog” charm. Additionally, Capcom is offering Deluxe and Premium Deluxe digital editions. The Deluxe Edition includes the base game plus cosmetics and charms for Musashi. Finally, the Premium Deluxe Edition packs in extra outfits for allies and an in-game digital soundtrack.

What We Can Expect

  • Iconic Historic Showdowns: Players will explore Mount Oe and the historic Kiyomizu-dera Temple while battling legendary threats like Shuten Doji and Musashi’s fated rival, Sasaki Ganryu.

  • Supernatural Oni Combat: You will wield supernatural speed and strength to carve through Genma garrisons, eventually unleashing Musashi’s full power to transform into an Oni Warrior.

  • Instant Demo Rewards: Anyone who plays the free demo starting today will unlock a special “Kubi Akari” charm bonus for use in the full game this September.

My Thoughts

When the trailer for Onimusha: Way of the Sword first started rolling, I will admit my anxiety spiked a bit. It initially gave off heavy souls-like vibes, and my desire to try one is small. Thankfully, this is a pure hack-and-slash swordplay action game with horror survival elements. I could not be more thrilled! The cinematic artwork is absolutely beautiful, the fluid combat looks incredibly satisfying, and the historic narrative surrounding Miyamoto Musashi promises to be entirely engrossing.

As an extra bonus, Capcom dropped the playable demo immediately. Having a slice of the game available to test right now, especially with a boss fight against Sasaki Ganryu, is a brilliant move that shows real confidence in the title. September cannot get here soon enough.
