E3 2019

What To Expect From Zack at E3 2019

It begins again. E3 is dangerously close to being around the corner. I’m incredibly happy to be attending for my second year, and that’s thanks to you listeners and readers for letting me stick around. So thanks for that. Nothing quite like dreams coming true.

This year is unquestionably a smaller show, and a lot of people question the very future of E3. Major companies keeps dropping out, and it feels like we’re reaching a bit of “end of generation” quiet period on massive titles. Nevertheless, I’m stoked for the show. There’s simply nothing quite like it, and last year was a blast.

Dying Light 2

Scott saw this game last year, and he’s seeing it again. Luckily, I get to tag along this time. Everything we saw and heard about it seemed so exciting. I’ve never played the original game from Techland, but I’m still fiendishly excited for this one. All the narrative choices they keep talking about sound almost too ambitious, but if they can pull it off I think we’ll have a very exciting game on our hands.

You don’t hire Chris Avellone unless you’re taking story seriously.

Unannounced Traveler’s Tales Game

Okay, sure this game may be unannounced. But we all know TT Games makes exactly one product: Lego. The timing would bear out that this game is almost certainly a Lego Star Wars game to cap off the sequel trilogy alongside Rise of the Skywalker. Who knows, though, maybe there will be a massive curveball thrown our way. Either way, I have a fondness for the collectathon nature of Lego games and am intrigued to see what will be on display.

Boyfriend Dungeon

Gamers and the weapons of their characters have always had a fetishistic relationship. I’m almost surprised it took this long for a game to let us date them. This Kickstarter project out of Kitfox Games was too charming to ignore. I’m not too familiar with the project, but I can’t wait to be. The charm and heart on display seems almost inspiring.

Part dungeon crawler RPG, part dating sim is a combo we’ve seen work really well in games like Persona. No reason it can’t work out well here.

Knife Sisters

I had never even heard of this game before we were contacted about seeing it. But when Transcenders Media described their game as a visual novel about love, manipulation, and BDSM; it couldn’t be ignored by me. I adore when games, or fiction in general, is willing to address the more taboo topics in our society. I’m impressed a game like this could even get a demo on the busy E3 show floor. Color me intrigued for this one.

Killer Queen Black

No one will shut the hell up about this game. I will finally see this game. Now everyone can shut up.

The Sinking City

This title from Frogwares really caught my eye last year, despite some severe technical issues. The take of melding the Lovecraftian mythos into one narrative whole is an interesting one, and I want to see how the full game turns out. I recall they were very big on the idea you’d have to solve things yourself. No quest markers or directions, for instance.

The studio has quite a pedigree with video games about investigation, considering their long history of Sherlock Holmes games. I’ve been watching this game for years now as it’s been quietly toiled away on. I hope the years of anticipation are paid off.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse

I really don’t know a lot about this video game, or its pen-and-paper roots. I do know that Cyanide Studios put out a pretty clever Call of Cthulhu game last year based on a pen-and-paper RPG. This certainly seems like the kind of game the studio should nail. I also know werewolves are sorely underrepresented as characters in video games, and are a dramatic goldmine. In Cyanide I’ll trust.

Unannounced Square Enix Game

This could be anything, but is almost certainly Avengers. I would be surprised if it turned out to be something else. As you’re reading this, the Crystal Dynamics project has been teased again after years of quiet. When we got this invitation, that was not the case. Square Enix handles its Western and Eastern projects completely separately, and I can not imagine what else Square West would be working on. Maybe it’s a surprise new Tomb Raider. I’m definitely down for that. Anything can happen at E3.

The Riftbreaker

The Riftbreaker is described as a base-building survival game. With a mech. I’m always down for a good time with giant mechs. Video games are always in need of more mech games. The game coming from Exor Studios is stunning to look at, and I hope the action measures up. Only time will tell.

Won’t Be the Last E3 Either

I wonder what else we’ll see this year. I plan to use my every waking moment making as many connections as I can. Hopefully booking more appointments while at the show. I want to provide as much coverage as possible for you guys and gals. Be sure to contact us if there’s a game you’re wild to see more of, and we’ll see what we can do. It’s gonna be a thrilling year.

There will be a bevy of special edition episodes for E3. If your anticipation is at max, also be sure to check out what Scott is seeing at the show. It’s quite a lineup.
