E3 2018

Square Enix’s E3 2018 Press Conference Recap

Square Enix had their turn with their own E3 press conference this afternoon. Surprisingly, this was an extremely short segment at just over 30 minutes. Although there were very few surprises, we did get to see some new footage. Here’s our recap of the event, complete with links to all of the trailers.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Although this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a trailer for Shadow of the Tomb Raider, this is our first glimpse at gameplay. The trailer below starts with a cinematic trailer towards the beginning of the game that we can’t wait to see pan out. After a while, we’re introduced to the gameplay footage where we see Lara stalking her enemies in the jungle. It looks like she has the ability to shoot weapons out of her adversaries hands, which causes them to turn on each other. This segment felt very stealthy and gave us a lot of Assassin’s Creed and even Horizon Zero Dawn vibes. If it’s not obvious, we’re very excited about this title.

Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood – “Under the Moonlight” Patch

Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood fans should be happy. The online RPG has a new patch coming called “Under the Moonlight”. You can see the trailer which has loads of cinematic and gameplay footage.

Final Fantasy X Monster Hunter World

One of the few surprises from Square Enix’s press conference was the reveal of a collaboration between two massive titles into a single game. Final Fantasy X Monster Hunter World combines elements of both games. We know only what’s shown in the trailer below and that it will release this summer.

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit

We saw our first glimpse of The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit from Dontnod at Microsoft’s press conference yesterday. Now it was Square Enix’s time to show this title off. The game takes place within the Life Is Strange universe, but offers a new cast of characters. The developers made it clear that this is not Life Is Strange 2, but merely a catalyst to bigger and better things. It will be available for free download on June 26th.

Dragon Quest XI

The Dragone Quest series has grown massive popularity, especially in the east. We knew that the eleventh game in the series was coming, but this was our first look at the game’s trailer. It hearkens back to the JRPG’s days, so fans of that genre should be very happy with this showing.

Babylon’s Fall

New intellectual properties are one of the reasons we love press conferences. Babylon’s Fall‘s trailer was very vague, mostly showing shots of various maps in a fantasy world. The very little action we got to see was very promising, however, even if it wasn’t gameplay. Platinum Games has a pedigree of offering a fast and frenetic style of gaming, however, so we’re looking very forward to this title. One shot showed a silhouette of four characters. Could this be a hint for a multiplayer aspect from this developer?

Just Cause 4

This wasn’t our first look at Just Cause 4, however, it still feels just as satisfying to have control of Rico Rodriguez once again. As expected, the action in this trailer looks insane as ever, especially with the inclusion of weather destruction. We can’t wait to strap in and blow some stuff up.

The Quiet Man

Next up was a trailer for a new game called The Quiet Man. Although we know very little about the story, it appears to feature a deaf man as the primary character. What sets this trailer apart from other game is its inclusion of full-motion video with a seamless transition to its hand-to-hand combat. Pretty impressive stuff, and we’re very interested to learn more.

Nier: Automata “Become As Gods”

Microsoft revealed yesterday that Nier: Automata‘s “Become As Gods” edition is coming to Xbox One. Square Enix showed us another trailer and confirmed the June 26th release date of this port.

Octopath Traveler

We were treated to yet another trailer for the previously-unveiled JRPG Octopath Traveler right before the closing moments. This looks to give fans of the genre a nostalgic treat with a fresh coat of paint. It looks charming and beautiful, and we can’t wait to get our hands on it.

Kingdom Hearts 3

We expected Kingdom Hearts 3 to close out the conference, but we didn’t expect it to be pretty much the same trailer we saw yesterday during Microsoft’s press event. We really didn’t get any extra information from this one, but you can enjoy the trailer again if you like.

And that’s a wrap on Square Enix’s press conference for E3 2018. As mentioned above, this was a very short presentation with very few surprises. Stay tuned for our recap and reaction to the press conference on an upcoming podcast episode.
