E3 2019

Devolver Digital E3 2019 Press Conference Recap

Publisher Devolver Digital also had a press conference on Sunday. Calling it “weird” would be putting it mildly. This team definitely has a very Adult Swim sense of humor that they seem to find more humorous than anyone watching. The stream wasn’t live, but rather more of a “Direct”, and Devolver had no problem using that nomenclature when referring to their stream. Odd presentation aside, the definitely had some interesting games to show. Here’s what we saw.

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout

In all honesty, I have no idea exactly what Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is in terms of gameplay. The trailer, which you can watch below, shows a multitude of blob-like creatures that seem to be racing one another towards a goal. According to the web site, this is an online multiplayer gamer where you “battle bizarre obstacles, shove through unruly competitors, and overcome the unbending laws of physics to avoid both humiliation and elimination.”

Devolver Bootleg

Zack and I both thought that this was legitimately a joke when we watched this stream live. But apparently “Devolver Bootleg” is a real thing. They’re offering an 8-in-1 pack of games that are literally rip-offs of their own games. Titles include Hotline MilwaukeeApe Out, Jr., and Enter the Gundungeon. The pack is available on Steam with a 1% discount ($4.94).

Carrion

The game from this stream that most interested me was Carrion, which promise a “reverse horror game”. This wasn’t our first look at this title, but it’s still a really clever premise. The metroidvania style game has you playing as a horrific blob monster devouring the good guys. I highly recommend checking out this trailer, which you can see below. In a world filled with a multitude of games from this genre, this feels like an original idea that I’m eager to play.

Enter the Gungeon: House of the Undead

It’s not often that you see arcade games showcased in E3 press conferences. But Enter the Gungeon: House of the Undead is breaking that mold. This light-gun cabinet is based on the Enter the Gungeon universe and is already available for preorder.

The Messenger: Picnic Panic

The Messenger was one of the better indie surprises of last year. The retro-style platformer (that will definitely remind you of the original Ninja Gaiden games) has a free update coming on July 11th called “Picnic Panic”. Look for this on the PC, Switch, and PS4 versions of the game. You can see the trailer below.

My Friend Pedro

We saw this game at last year’s E3, but it just keeps looking even more badass. Imagine if John Wick were a 2-D action shooter. That sums up My Friend Pedro in a nutshell. We’re definitely going to try to get our hands on this game while on the show floor.

And that’s a wrap on Devolver Digital’s live stream. Be sure to check out our coverage on EA Play’s press conference, Microsoft’s 2019 E3 Briefing, and Bethesda’s press conference. Also, keep it locked here for our coverage later today on Ubisoft and Square Enix.
